Samsung looks to innovative S9 camera to energize Galaxy S smartphone salesFebruary 25, 2018Samsung is packing its main innovative push into the cameras of its latest flagship Galaxy S devices. With the new super slow motion video capture, Samsung has improved on previous industry attempts to commercialize this feature. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are strong handset designs which evolve from 2017’s excellent S8. They are markedly different in camera quality and display size from the two to three year old smartphones potential customers own now which should boost upgrades. However, consumers may delay purchase because of rising flagship prices.
Samsung's next Galaxy S must beat old smartphones to drive upgrades, not recent modelsFebruary 19, 2018Samsung is competing with the models it launched several years ago, and not last years’ Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Note 8 because it is far too soon for purchasers of those models to buy a new phone. By looking at the active installed base of which smartphones are currently in use we can compare the features of Samsung’s latest flagship with the most common models consumers own and use now. Globally, the most common Samsung flagship models in use are Samsung’s S7 and S7 Edge (2016) with a combined 5.26% share, 2015’s Galaxy S6 with 1.78% share, and the four year old Galaxy S5 with 1.4% share. But are large country differences in which are the most popular Samsung smartphone models.

Apple’s Ambition for iPhone X is Nothing Less Than to Regain Smartphone Design and Innovation LeadershipOctober 26, 2017It was the most highly anticipated smartphone announcement of the year when Apple revealed the iPhone X to the world at their special event in September celebrating the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone at their brand new campus in Cupertino, California. The edge-to-edge screen and button-less fascia design sets the iPhone X from any other iPhone released before it. Apple completely did away with their signature TouchID home button in favor of a more technologically secure bio-metric using facial recognition dubbed FaceID – an industry first. Coupled with new AI tuned application processor, Bionic A11, and dual camera design borrowed from the iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone X was intended to set the new standard of iPhone design going forward in the next decade.

Samsung seeks to reestablish its reputation for innovation with “infinity display” Galaxy S8March 29, 2017The S8 and S8+ are visibly differentiated smartphones because of their large Samsung displays, tiny bezels, and fast chipsets which all play to Samsung group’s competitive strengths. Samsung’s initial Bixby AI implementation falls short of its goal of being a comprehensive AI assistant because of weak app integration and limited voice compatibility. Provided Samsung can manufacture sufficient volumes of S8 and S8 + smartphones, and has no new reliability issues, the S8 will be a success for Samsung. The strong industrial design will support the Samsung brand and provide a foundation for Samsung’s ecosystem ambitions with VR, Bixby AI, and enterprise offerings.
