At CERAWeek 2019, technology and energy continue to coalesce in force and presenceApril 04, 2019The interrelation of energy and technology is not new. However, CERAWeek seems primed to be at the nexus of these two disciplines in the future. I expect the increased presence of technology companies at future conferences, an even larger Agora, and a sharpened focus on transformational technologies like cloud services, IoT, AI, and robotics. This is true especially as cloud giants look to more fully penetrate markets beyond consumer and enterprise.
Connected lighting trends to watch in 2019February 12, 2019Competition has slowed for LED lighting component suppliers over the past two years, as global LED production capacity reached its peak. This slow-down has forced suppliers to determine the best way to digest the huge production capacity, while minimizing any possible harm to the industry.
Smart home and appliances tackle analytics at CES 2019January 17, 2019At CES 2019, there was no shortage of exciting news and buzz for smart home and appliances. Lighting, security cameras, software integrations and voice assistants took center stage in smart home announcements, while for appliances, the big news was on displays, artificial intelligence (AI) and guided cooking.
Lighting equipment attached to BMS platforms will exceed $4.5 billion in 2022May 14, 2018At Light+Building 2018 the leading lighting companies, Philips Lighting and Osram, both announced their own BMS platforms, Interact and Lightelligence, respectively. These BMS platforms allow data to be collected and analyzed via building-wide sensors, via either third-party applications or proprietary applications.
New IKEA smart lighting challenges Philips HueApril 30, 2018IKEA has added a color-changing bulb to its smart lighting line, Trådfri. This addition is currently being sold as part of a dimming kit, which contains a bulb, a dimmer and a battery for the dimmer. It is not yet known whether these color-changing bulbs will be sold separately, like the current Trådfri white color bulbs, or whether the motion sensor and gateway kit will be made available with the color-changing Trådfri bulb.
More MOCVD reactors leading to 28 percent GaN LED surplus in 2019March 27, 2018After assessing planned purchases by suppliers, IHS Markit projects that 330 metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor chambers will be installed in 2018, to produce LEDs fabricated from gallium nitride (GaN).
Lighting trends for 2018February 27, 2018The lighting industry has seen a rapid shift in the past five years as the industry has moved to adopt light emitting diode (LED) products. This shift has bought with it intense price competition that has proven difficult for vendors, with some having chosen to exit the market entirely.
Global market for smart lighting and connected lighting controls reached $8 billion in 2017February 06, 2018The world market for smart lighting and connected lighting controls was valued at $8 billion in 2017 and is forecast to more than double in size by 2021.
LEDs Took Half a Billion Tons of Carbon Dioxide From the Sky in 2017December 21, 2017The use of LEDs to illuminate buildings and outdoor spaces reduced the total carbon dioxide emissions of lighting by an estimated 570 million tons in 2017. This reduction is roughly equivalent to shutting down 162 coal-fired power plants.
Nationstar Breaks into LED Top 10, According to new IHS Markit RankingsSeptember 28, 2017After narrowly missing out on entering IHS Markit’s top 10 for 2016 and Q1’17, Nationstar has broken into the top 10 packaged LED rankings for Q2’17.
Lighting Is Not Driving LED Growth in 2017August 21, 2017Strong growth in packaged LED lighting revenue from 2007 to 2014 was the result of consumers replacing incandescent and fluorescent lighting with LED lighting. However, price erosion due to competition and the trend toward less robust, inexpensive 2835 packages caused revenues to decline by 9 percent in 2015, and 1 percent in 2016. Starting in 2017, revenue growth is expected to increase by 3 percent as prices settle.
The Unseen Revolution: LED LightingAugust 15, 2017Despite the fall in prices witnessed over the last five years, LED lamps are estimated to have accounted for only 10.2 percent of global lamp shipments in 2016. However, IHS Markit estimates that by the end of 2022 LED lamps will make up more than 50 percent of global lamp shipments, and reach 70.1 percent of global lamp shipments by the end of 2024.
Smart lighting and connected lighting controls market to double by 2020December 19, 2016The world market for smart lighting and connected lighting controls was valued at $6 billion in 2015, and is forecast to more than double in size by 2020, according to a new report from IHS Markit. The smart lighting market is being driven by the IoT, as lighting companies look beyond the transition to LED lighting and look to leverage the unique position lighting holds within the IoT.
Infrared LED Global Revenue is Growing Faster than Overall Infrared ComponentsAugust 16, 2016Increased adoption of biometrics security in mobile phones, close-circuit television and other consumer applications has spurred revenue growth in the global market for infrared LEDs, from $201.5 million in 2014 to $241.4 million in 2015. While infrared LEDs grew 19.8 percent year over year in 2015, the overall infrared components market declined 9 percent. Osram, Everlight and Vishay were the leading suppliers in 2015.
