Fortnite: Battle Royale forges its own route onto AndroidAugust 10, 2018Epic Games has released its battle-royale version of Fortnite on Android, but isn’t doing so via the Google Play store. The game will be made available through a downloader accessed on Epic Games’ site, thus allowing it to sidestep the 30% revenue share applied to any purchasing occurring via distribution on Google Play.
Tencent acquires majority Supercell stake in record mobile games dealJune 21, 2016A group led by Chinese internet company Tencent has agreed to acquire an 84 percent stake in Finland-based mobile games developer Supercell for $8.6 billion. The stake, acquired from Japan’s Softbank, values Supercell at $10.2 billion. Following the close of the deal, Tencent expects to hold a voting interest worth 50 percent of the new controlling consortium. Supercell’s existing management will continue to lead the company.
Glu hopes to shake off negative Q4 with Taylor Swift mobile games dealFebruary 08, 2016US-based mobile games publisher Glu Mobile reported $61m Q4 2015 revenues, down 16.3% on the same period in 2014. Profitability also took a hit as it ended Q4 with a $3m net loss compared with $1.4m net income in Q4 2014. The publisher’s full year results are more positive. Its $249.9m 2015 total revenues were up 12% on 2014. IHS estimates that the overall mobile games market grew by 27% year-on-year in 2015, so Glu is being outpaced by the rest of the market. Glu has also made two investments in new games developers and extended its roster of celebrity mobile games partnerships.
Tencent aims for Western mobile games expansion with Glu Mobile investmentMay 01, 2015Tencent has acquired a 14.6% stake in US mobile games publisher Glu Mobile for $126m. Glu’s Q1 2015 revenues of $69.5m were 56% up on the same period in 2014. It reported 54.6m monthly active users, which was 15% down from 64m in Q1 2014.
Facebook extends mobile ad tech and Messenger platformMarch 26, 2015Facebook launched a new platform for developers to create apps that integrate with the Messenger app at its annual F8 conference. 40 apps are available at launch enabling users to share GIFS, photo, video and audio clips. The new platform also provides an in-app discovery tool that enables app users to find compatible apps within Messenger and allows users to share app install links without leaving their conversations.
