Ofcom removes Sky Sports 'must offer' regulationNovember 20, 2015UK communications regulator Ofcom has removed the 'wholesale must offer' regulation requiring Sky to make its flagship sports channels available to competitors including BT. Under the regulation issued in 2010, Sky was obliged to make Sky Sports 1 and 2 available to all UK television providers. Ofcom also set the wholesale pricing of the Sky Sports channels. In a statement issued on Thursday this week, Ofcom said that the decision came after consulting on the relevance of the regulation in the current pay TV market. The regulator decided that Sky is supplying its channels 'widely and on commercial terms outside of the regulation'.Subscribers Only

ITV agrees to buy TV assets of Northern Ireland's UTVOctober 19, 2015ITV plc is to add the Northern Ireland TV assets of UTV Media to its portfolio after agreeing a takeover worth £100 million ($155 million). The deal, announced this morning, will mean that ITV will own 13 of the 15 ITV franchises in the United Kingdom. It will also own UTV Television, the new channel in the Republic of Ireland launched by UTV Media in January. Poland's TVN launches original commissions for Player.pl serviceOctober 07, 2015Polish broadcaster TVN is pushing further into online with an investment in five original series. The first series, a Polish version of US comedy Web Therapy, will launch on TVN’s Player.pl service on 21 October. Speaking at the Mipcom TV market in Cannes this morning, TVN executives said the 10 episode series will cost 1 million zlotys ($266 million), a similar budget to one of its traditional linear TV series. Between Q4 this year and Q1 2016, TVN will also debut two reality series, Lip Sync Battle and Start U Up, documentary series My Love Story and drama co-production Cape Town.Subscribers Only

Telefonica wins rights to Spanish football for 2015/2016 seasonJuly 10, 2015Content deal: Telefónica has secured the TV rights to Spanish domestic football for the upcoming 2015/2016 season for €600 million ($667 million), according to a joint statement released today by the telco and La Liga. Telefónica, which owns the Canal Plus pay TV platform, has acquired pay TV rights to the top two divisions of Spanish league football - the Liga BBVA and Liga Adelante - together with the Copa del Rey. Spanish government decrees collective sale of La Liga TV rightsMay 01, 2015Spain's Council of Ministers this morning published a Royal Decree which will require football clubs in the top two divisions of la Liga to sell their TV rights collectively rather than, as they do at present, negotiating deals individually. Regulator approves Telefónica’s takeover of Canal Plus - with conditionsApril 24, 2015Spain’s competition regulator CNMC has approved Telefónica’s takeover of pay TV operator Canal Plus subject to conditions including a requirement to offer at least half of its premium channels to third party platforms. The green light comes nearly one year after the telecommunications giant announced the acquisition of Prisa’s 56% stake in Distribudora de Television (DTS), the parent company of Canal Plus Espana. BBC licence fee should not be abolished, say MPsFebruary 26, 2015The licence fee does not have a long term future in its current form but the current system of funding public broadcasting in the UK should remain in place for at least another five years, according to British MPs. Sky reports Q4 customer growth in first combined set of resultsFebruary 04, 2015Across its three key businesses, Sky ended 2014 with an increased retail customer base of 20,607,000 – up 4.3% on Q4 2013. The entire pay TV group also experienced 4.9% year-on-year growth in subscription revenue to £4,842 million (€6 million) for the six months ending 31 December 2014. Premier League offers more live matches in new TV rights packageDecember 15, 2014The Premier League has published the tender for audiovisual rights for three years starting in 2016/2017, increasing the number of live matches to 168 from the current 154 per season.
