Rapidly growing CA Module market set to slowNovember 21, 2014Conditional access modules (CAMs) have been a concern for set-top box (STB) manufacturers since their launch, because they propose a STB-less pay TV experience. The introduction of the CI+ specification combined with the increased availability of TVs with digital cable and satellite tuners has enabled significant growth in operator support for and the sale of CAMs. This growth has come at the direct expense of set-top boxes.Subscribers Only

TV Technology Market Monitor – STB Q1/Q2 2014June 17, 2014272M digital set-top boxes were shipped in 2013, up 3% on the 264M STBs shipped in 2012. The value of the industry grew by 2.2% to $20.3B, driven primarily by demand for pay satellite and cable STBs, with more modest growth across IPTV and pay DTT platforms. Despite growth through to 2015, volumes will decline in 2016 and 2017, as analogue switch off is completed in most of the world. Industry value will grow more modestly at 0.5% annually over the forecast period as demand for higher value advanced boxes in emerging markets, which are driving volumes, remains slow and will not counteract the effects of price competition.Subscribers Only
