The importance of Sony’s innovations with these new smartphones will set the tone for the smartphone market for the next few years. IHS Markit expects other smartphone OEMs to deliver similar capabilities in the future including copying Sony’s 4K HDR video capture. But there is much more work needed to re-build Sony’s smartphone business and achievable sustainable profitability.

HBO licenses content to Amazon Prime Video in JapanFebruary 05, 2018HBO signed a content deal with Amazon in January 2018 to license 50 HBO series on Amazon Prime Video in Japan. Existing Prime subscribers will be able to watch HBO shows, including Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, The Sopranos and The Wire, without having to pay an additional fee. HBO content will be available on Amazon Prime Video in Japan starting April 1, 2018. Details on the duration of the deal are undisclosed.

Amazon launches retail store carrier billing in Japan with BangoJune 06, 2017Amazon has partnered with UK-based mobile carrier billing vendor Bango to enable its Japanese retail store customers to charge transactions to their mobile phone bills. At launch, Amazon will support billing for customers of NTT Docomo and Au (KDDI), which claim a combined total of over 120m subscriptions accounting for around 75% of the Japanese market according to IHS Markit data.
