Sam's Club Kicks Off 2018 US TV Selling SeasonOctober 30, 2018Each year, usually a few weeks prior to Black Friday in early November, retailers are eager to be the first to start attracting eager buyers ahead of the official start of the holiday shopping season. These early promotions seem to attract a decent amount of buying interest, especially if the retailer is less likely to participate as aggressively during Black Friday. Sam's Club, a member-only US warehouse club retailer, has published the circular advertisement for their November 10th One Day Savings Event. TVs are predictably a prominent feature of the sale, and we break down how this might be very early indicators of Black Friday pricing.Subscribers Only

TV sets excluded form China TariffsJune 15, 2018On June 15th, the US Office of the Trade Representative released the final document indicating which of the more than 1,300 products were to be included in tariffs against Chinese imports. The final list included more then 800 products, and an additional 280 were proposed pending public comment, totaling $50 billion in imports. TVs were initially on the list of products, causing panic among the CE industry, but intense lobbying led to TVs being dropped from the list of products.Subscribers Only

Fire TV returns to the battleApril 25, 2018After a weak launch in 2017, Amazon has struck a deal with Best Buy to relaunch the Fire TV platform. Starting summer 2018, Best Buy will start selling Toshiba and Insignia Fire TV Edition Smart TVs, which will also be available on Amazon.com with Best Buy as a third party seller. This has several implications for the smart TV space, but especially for companies like Roku because Insignia was previously using the Roku TV platform and was one of the larger partners last year. For Amazon, it also represents a recognition that the brick and mortar space is still very important for some categories where consumers still prefer to "kick the tires" before purchasing.Subscribers Only

Impact of Proposed China Tariffs on US TV MarketApril 06, 2018On April 4th, the US Office of the Trade Representative published a list of 1,300 products that could be subjected to an additional 25% import tariff if coming from China. Flat panel TVs are included on this list, and given the very low margins on the bulk of entry level TVs, and the fact that many of the smaller in mid-sized TVs are imported fully assembled from China, it could have a very big impact on the entire TV market. The attached report breaks down the details of the possible tariff, and the impacts on the supply chain, as well as possible reactions. Of course, it is important to note that this list of products is under a 60 day review process, and we expect heavy lobbying on the part of manufacturers and trade organizations. The outcome or final list could change before the end of May.Subscribers Only

Early Observations from Black Friday 2017 - TVsNovember 26, 2017As is our tradition, IHS Markit ventured out on Black Friday (including Thanksgiving night) to observe the start of the holiday shopping season. Overall, traffic was comparable to a year ago, if slightly lower in some less prominent locations. Online sales are sure to have an impact on store traffic, but overall sales may very well be higher due to a strong economy and good employment. For the TV category, the outlook is a bit more muted with prices on par with a year ago, and it takes big discounts to get consumers excited about TVs nowadays. Our analysis published a week ago highlights our take on the advertisements, so this analysis is focused more on the feel of the start of the Holiday using a very informal store visit methodology.Subscribers Only

China and North America TV Shipments Fall Sharply in Q3 2017, IHS Markit SaysNovember 20, 2017The impact of higher LCD TV panel prices at the beginning of 2017 continued to weigh on retail demand for LCD TVs into Q3 by way of slower retail price erosion, particularly in China and North America, the two most price sensitive regions.
