It's also the first time Google has chosen a Chinese brand to make a Nexus device. US telecom operators are notable among major operator groups in choosing not to range this generation of Nexus smartphones. IHS believes this lack of US operator support is because of misplaced fears. US operators should seize the tactical benefit for their customer acquisition volumes from selling these strong Nexus devices.

Google's Motorola Mobility sale will boost Lenovo in the US Mobile MarketJanuary 29, 2014The deal with Lenovo confirms that Google's main interest in buying Motorola was its patent and IP portfolio. Also, Google removes the channel conflict with other Android smartphone makers but has made a significant loss on its investment. Lenovo's $2.91bn barely covers the cash acquired as part of Motorola Mobility. It's happening now because Google has settled intellectual property cross licensing with Samsung. Lenovo benefits in four key areas through the acquisition: Entry to the US mobile market; brand assets; mobile engineering expertise; and a stronger Google relationship. IHS believes Lenovo is right to plan to use the Motorola brand in the US, but its own brand in China and emerging markets because of Motorola's very weak footprint outside the Americas.
Apple innovates with iPhone 5S security to grow its ecosystemSeptember 10, 2013Today Apple unveiled two new iPhone models and the iOS7 software update for existing iPhones. The new flagship, iPhone 5S includes a faster 64bit processor using a new A7 chip, the first on a smartphone. It also has an M7 motion coprocessor, to improve the iPhone’s ability to manage contextual sensor data and an upgraded camera with a larger sensor and a brighter f2.2 lens. Apple has increased security with a fingerprint sensor on iPhone 5S and new iOS7 features that make it harder for thieves, and helps app developers. The new iPhone 5C model ends Apple's re-purposing of former flagship iPhone models at a lower price. Microsoft is to buy "substantially all" of Nokia's Devices and Services unit for Euro5.44bn. The acquisition includes the groups that make both smartphones and non-smartphones, but not the associated patents. Nokia's patent portfolio will remain part of Nokia; and Microsoft will gain a ten year non-exclusive license to its use. Nokia's HERE maps are also licensed to Microsoft under a ten year non-exclusive basis. HERE maps and NSN networks business will remain as the core of Nokia's ongoing product portfolio. Euro1.65bn of the Euro5.44bn deal covers licensing of intellectual property, and the remaining Euro3.79 is for the purchase of the devices unit.

As part of iOS 6, Apple introduces its own Maps application, replacing the original mapping solution provided by Google since the launch of the first iPhone. By doing so, Apple is recognising the extreme importance of location and mapping services for a mobile platform. The company appears willing to break with its traditional mode of operation and launch an unfinished service, in order to have its own maps on the iOS platform. Apple relies on in-house capabilities, through acquisitions, and a host of third party developers to make the app work and so hopes to differentiate from Google's Maps in Android and Nokia's Maps in Windows Phone.

Apple's newest iPhone model features several new features over the iPhone 4S. The most obvious of these is the larger screen 4 inch screen. All previous iPhone models sported a 3.5 inch display. This new display is essentially an elongated screen version of previous iPhone displays; providing additional height with no additional width and a 1,136 x 640 resolution (16:9 aspect ratio). The screen also features in-cell technology which works to minimise the distance between the user and the display and also helps reduce the thickness of the device.
