Italian mobile operators respond to Iliad threatAugust 16, 2018Iliad entered the Italian mobile market on 29 May 2018, as part of the remedy package that mandated the merger between Wind and Tre, which was announced in 2016. Within 50 days, it accumulated one million mobile subscribers, which is equivalent to 1.2% of total mobile subscribers in Italy. In a market where over three-quarters of mobile subscribers are on prepaid tariffs without contracted terms, Italian incumbent mobile operators must react quickly to combat the Iliad threat.

Samsung looks to innovative S9 camera to energize Galaxy S smartphone salesFebruary 25, 2018Samsung is packing its main innovative push into the cameras of its latest flagship Galaxy S devices. With the new super slow motion video capture, Samsung has improved on previous industry attempts to commercialize this feature. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are strong handset designs which evolve from 2017’s excellent S8. Sony tries again to convert tech leadership into improved sales with Xperia XZ2 smartphone's 4K HDR video recordingFebruary 25, 2018At MWC Sony Mobile unveiled two new smartphones, Xperia XZ2, XZ Compact and the commercial launch for its Xperia Duo wearable. The importance of Sony’s innovations with these new smartphones will set the tone for the smartphone market for the next few years. IHS Markit expects other smartphone OEMs to deliver similar capabilities in the future including copying Sony’s 4K HDR video capture. But there is much more work needed to re-build Sony’s smartphone business and achievable sustainable profitability.

BT-owned Openreach announces plan to accelerate FTTP deploymentFebruary 05, 2018Less than three months after Vodafone and CityFibre revealed plans to deploy a fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) network to 1 million UK premises by 2021, BT’s infrastructure arm, Openreach, has announced plans to accelerate its FTTP deployment. Openreach intends to rollout FTTP networks to 3 million UK premises by 2020 – a 50% increase on the company’s previous rollout target. As of February 2018, Openreach passed 500,000 UK premises with FTTP services.
