Italian mobile operators respond to Iliad threatAugust 16, 2018Iliad entered the Italian mobile market on 29 May 2018, as part of the remedy package that mandated the merger between Wind and Tre, which was announced in 2016. Within 50 days, it accumulated one million mobile subscribers, which is equivalent to 1.2% of total mobile subscribers in Italy. In a market where over three-quarters of mobile subscribers are on prepaid tariffs without contracted terms, Italian incumbent mobile operators must react quickly to combat the Iliad threat.

Telecom Italia plans voluntary separation of fixed access networkMarch 07, 2018Telecom Italia has announced its plan to separate its fixed access network division into a new independent legal entity, known as Netco. Netco will assume responsibility for managing Telecom Italia’s fixed access network, the associated infrastructure (such as buildings, electronic equipment and IT systems) as well as the staff that work directly on Telecom Italia’s fixed access network business.

AGCOM halts Vivendi’s Italian ambitionsApril 19, 2017Italy’s communications regulator AGCOM has intervened in Vivendi’s strategic expansion into Southern Europe, ruling that Vivendi will not be allowed to keep its stakes in both Telecom Italia and Mediaset. AGCOM has stated that for Vivendi to hold a share in both companies contravenes Italy’s Gasparri law, which was designed to protect media pluralism from the creation of dominant positions.
