Netflix goes global in one fell swoop, launching in 130 new territoriesJanuary 11, 2016Netflix has executed its global expansion plan by launching in 130 new territories simultaneously. The online-video streaming giant made the announcement at the CES conference and trade show in Las Vegas on 6th January 2015. The US company, which launched its streaming service in the US in 2007, now claims to be available in almost every country worldwide, with exceptions including China, Syria and North Korea. The service has added Arabic, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese to the selection of 17 languages it already supported, bringing the total to 21.Subscribers Only

MTG sells central and eastern Europe pay TV channelsOctober 26, 2015MTG has agreed to sell its central and eastern Europe (CEE) pay TV channel operations for $45.5 million. Sabiero Holdings Ltd, controlled by private equity firm Baring Vostok, has acquired the CEE channels while the Russian segment has been purchased by LLC Sinerdzhi. The Russian channel operations include all the factual and cinema channels while the international segment includes all the pan-regional feeds and the TV1000 movie networks. The deal does not include any of MTG’s sports channels -with the exception of Viasat Sport East, the global Trace, or MTG’s free-to-air operations.Subscribers Only

CTC Media agrees deal with UTH as Russian sell-offs continueSeptember 25, 2015CTC Media has accepted an offer from UTH Russia to purchase 75% of its business in Russia and Kazakhstan for $200 million. CTC Media was forced to sell the assets in order to comply with an amendment to the Russian ‘On Mass Media’ law, which will impose a 20% non-Russian ownership cap of Russian television companies beginning on 1 January 2016. Currently over 70% of the company is foreign-owned. Modern Times Group (MTG) owns the largest share of the media company (37.9%). UTH Russia offers to buy 75% of CTC MediaJuly 07, 2015CTC Media has received an offer from UTH Russia to purchase 75% of its business in Russia and Kazakhstan for $200 million – a low price which values the company at 94% less than at the time of the last major share transaction two years ago. Raduga TV to close downDecember 03, 2014The Russian satellite TV operator Raduga TV will stop providing its services on 5 December because it has failed to obtain the required satellite TV broadcasting license from Roskomnadzor, the local regulator for supervision of communications, information technology and mass media. This was a joint decision by the Modern Times Group and a Russian company called Continental Media, which have equal shares in Raduga Holdings Inc., a sole owner of LLC DalGeoCom which runs Raduga TV.Subscribers Only

CNN to leave Russia in DecemberNovember 12, 2014Turner Broadcasting System Europe, a subsidiary of Time Warner, has decided to stop the distribution of CNN International in Russia by the end of December in response to recent legislation which limits foreign ownership in media companies. On 15 October Vladimir Putin passed an amendment to the media law, which was passed by the parliament on 26 September, preventing non-Russian companies from owning more than 20%. The new rule will come into effect in 2016. Russian owners who have holdings through offshore companies have until January 2017 to comply. At present there is no cap on printed press and a cap of 50% on radio and television companies.Subscribers Only

Russian broadcasters launch joint production conglomerateNovember 06, 2014Three of Russia’s largest TV companies will collaborate on a large-scale joint production venture. Beginning next year, the company, called Sozdavayemaya (The Creator), will make TV entertainment and films.
