Broadband World Forum 2018 highlightsNovember 27, 2018Broadband World Forum has finally come of age, celebrating its 18th edition this year in what continues to be the annual meeting point for the broadband industry. Messe Berlin opened its doors to more than 4100 attendees from more than 1500 organisations that gathered to share, learn and promote anything broadband. Historically, Broadband World Forum has been a telco-centric show and that was particularly evident this year. Samsung looks to innovative S9 camera to energize Galaxy S smartphone salesFebruary 25, 2018Samsung is packing its main innovative push into the cameras of its latest flagship Galaxy S devices. With the new super slow motion video capture, Samsung has improved on previous industry attempts to commercialize this feature. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are strong handset designs which evolve from 2017’s excellent S8. They are markedly different in camera quality and display size from the two to three year old smartphones potential customers own now which should boost upgrades. However, consumers may delay purchase because of rising flagship prices.

DIGI Hungary to acquire rival telco InvitelJuly 27, 2017DIGI, one of the key players in the Hungarian pay TV and telecoms market, has reached an agreement to buy Invitel’s retail and small business customers for €140.7m. Invitel is the leading alternative telco in the market, offering pay TV, internet and fixed line telephony. Bulsatcom aims to consolidate its Bulgarian pay TV lead with satellite launchJune 29, 2017Bulgarian operator Bulsatcom has successfully launched the country’s first geostationary satellite, BulgariaSat 1, in cooperation with Ellon Musk’s SpaceX. The satellite, which launched on June 24 2017, is owned and operated by Bulsatcom and is the second satellite to be launched in Europe with 100% private investment. The total value of the project is $235 million, with an estimated return on investment of 10 years.

Netflix goes global in one fell swoop, launching in 130 new territoriesJanuary 11, 2016Netflix has executed its global expansion plan by launching in 130 new territories simultaneously. The online-video streaming giant made the announcement at the CES conference and trade show in Las Vegas on 6th January 2015. The US company, which launched its streaming service in the US in 2007, now claims to be available in almost every country worldwide, with exceptions including China, Syria and North Korea. Samsung foregoes global release for an early Note 5 launchAugust 13, 2015Samsung launched two new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+. While these releases were anticipated, Samsung is launching ahead of schedule to try to maximise its momentum before Apple launches new iPhones in late September. TiVo has acquired CubiwareJune 17, 2015Set-top box (STB) and TV software vendor TiVo has acquired Cubiware; a Polish STB middleware provider. Cubiware will enable TiVo to address emerging market opportunities outside its traditional, mature and saturated pay TV markets. On the surface it provides TiVo with access to a customer base in emerging markets, but the rationale behind the acquisition may have much deeper strategic underpinnings.

Scripps Networks Interactive to become the majority shareholder in Polish TV operator TVNMarch 16, 2015US-based media group, Scripps Interactive Networks, has agreed to buy a controlling interest in Poland's TVN. The deal will give Scripps a 52.7% stake in the broadcaster, previously owned by ITI and Canal Plus Group, and will cost Scripps €584 million in cash and the assumption of €840 million of debt.
