It’s hard to get rid of those good old DMS switches!June 12, 2018That’s the key takeaway from Ribbon Perspectives 18’s Network Transformation panel held on June 5 in Los Angeles. With more than 600 attendees and loud L.A. style music blasting before, between, and after sessions, the event keeps growing. And of course, you don’t want to miss those perspectives. The panel had representatives from BT, Bell, and Verizon, all talking about their ongoing network transformation initiatives. All three are big on the role of software defined networks (SDN) as the key enabler of automation while preserving some of the legacy nodes that are fully depreciated and providing high reliability. Collaborative meeting services grew 10 percent in 2017April 17, 2018Worldwide revenue for collaborative meeting services (video and web conferencing) grew 10 percent in 2017, totaling $2.5 billion. Growth was driven by the need for better communication tools to bridge geographic divides between employees, partners and customers; the continuing adoption of unified communications; and the shift from in-house infrastructure deployments to a cloud delivery model.

SIP trunking penetrationOctober 03, 2017For the seventh year in a row, we are publishing our estimates on SIP trunking penetration in North America. This continues to be one of the most frequently requested metrics as we look to understand how quickly SIP adoption is happening and how much more upside opportunity is there to displace TDM. As SIP continues to progress, there is less of a need to understand when SIP trunking becomes mainstream but rather how quickly it fully displaces TDM. SIP trunking has become mainstream in North America, but that isn’t the case in most parts of the world. Clients, please log in to view the full content.Subscribers Only

Mitel Acquires ShoreTelJuly 27, 2017Today Mitel announced its intent to acquire ShoreTel, which does not come as a big surprise. Over the past several years this combination has been rumored multiple times, and ShoreTel’s board has publicly been looking at strategic options for the company. The enterprise communications market is extremely tough with premises-based sales in decline and the majority of sales in the hands of only a few dominant vendors. Meanwhile businesses are shifting to cloud services, which is a very crowded market with a number of providers and no dominant company. Mitel and ShoreTel are among the few that have a position in the legacy PBX market while working on pivoting to cloud services. Clients, please log in to access the full content.Subscribers Only

Sonus and GENBAND MergerMay 23, 2017Today Sonus and GENBAND announced its intention to merge the two companies. This is not a surprise because it’s been rumored that the two companies have been in discussions over the past year. Additionally, both companies stand out as pure-plays in the service provider VoIP market facing increasing pressure from the three large telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs): Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia. As the market begins its contraction with an increasing amount of business driven from mobile operators, vendors such as Sonus and GENBAND have been affected. At the close of the merger, it is expected that Sonus and GENBAND shareholders will each own 50% of the combined company. The value of the transaction is approximately $745M. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2017. Clients, log in to read the complete insight.Subscribers Only

Windstream Extends Buying Streak to Broadview NetworksApril 13, 2017Today Windstream announced it will acquire UCaaS provider Broadview Networks in an all-cash transaction valued at $227.5M. This follows its $1.1B merger with EarthLink that closed in February. The value is less than current 12-month revenues of $289M, but it is almost 2.7X of Broadview Networks’ UCaaS revenue making it one of the most important acquisitions in the market to date. Windstream is making the acquisition not for Broadview Networks’ legacy product suite but for its UCaaS platform, customer base, and channel work, and for the opportunity to shake up the market. The acquisition is expected to close in 3Q17. Clients, log in to read the complete insight.Subscribers Only

ALE Focuses on Verticals and RainbowFebruary 14, 2017OLast week I had the opportunity to spend a few days with the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (ALE) management team in New Orleans. Jack Chen, ALE’s CEO laid out the company’s strategy and plans for 2017 while making it clear it needs to return shareholder value, which requires it to be highly focused. In 2016, the company worked on making sure it had the components and plans in place for executing on a vertical focus, cloud components, and a CPaaS platform (communication platform as a service) in 2017. ALE has set a course for 2017 in which it can be differentiated and grow, but it won’t be trying to be all things to all companies nor will it chase every new trend that bubbles up. Mitel Divests Mobile DivisionDecember 20, 2016On 2 March 2015, Mitel announced its intent to acquire Mavenir for $560M as a means of entering the mobile infrastructure space and creating revenue diversity. Not even 2 years later Mitel has decided to divest the mobile division to Siris Capital for $350M cash and a $35M non-interest bearing note. This is significantly less than Mitel originally paid for the business despite revenue in the business growing over the past few years. The move to sell the business doesn’t surprise me. I always found the mix a hard one, and at an analyst event with Mitel in November that was very apparent. Clients, log in to read the complete insight.Subscribers Only

VoLTE Gaining GroundOctober 25, 2016Earlier this month, I attended and chaired the first day of the LTE Voice Summit in London. Similar to the last 2 years, there was plenty of evidence of VoLTE progressing across multiple regions. There weren’t any new big topics—items like VoWiFi and NFV are well understood and underway—and for the most part, discussions centered around progress being made on adoption. Roaming was the only area that still elicited healthy debate on which approach to take and why. As of 30 September 2016, 86 operators have launched commercial VoLTE services across 49 countries.Subscribers Only

Sonus Acquires TaquaOctober 05, 2016On September 26, 2016, Sonus acquired Taqua for $20M cash at close and a provision for additional cash if certain revenue thresholds are exceeded. Sonus has acquired Taqua primarily in order to bring a broader set of products to mobile operators as they migrate to VoLTE and VoWiFi. Though mergers and acquisitions in the service provider VoIP and IMS arena have slowed, there has been a fair amount of speculation around Sonus, GENBAND, and Metaswitch.Subscribers Only

IMS and SBC Virtual Network Functions UpdateJuly 19, 2016We have started covering specific virtual network functions (VNFs) on an ongoing basis in our quarterly Service Provider VoIP and IMS Equipment and Subscribers Market Tracker - Regional. Many of the IMS core functions such as CSCF, HSS, and voice application servers are software elements that vendors have been moving from dedicated hardware to general purpose servers over the past several years. With mobile operators moving to VoLTE and large scale IMS networks, NFV has become front and center with work being done to make the network elements operational under hypervisors and NFV management and orchestration (MANO) software.Subscribers Only
