Ams/Heptagon, STMicroelectronics and Time of flight sensors in the iPhone 7October 27, 2016In a previous analyst insight on the ams acquisition of Heptagon, it was noted that the acquisition could be linked (among other reasons) to Heptagon having a major customer commitment (assumed to be Apple) for a product ramp in H2 2017. IHS Markit has assumed that this must be for Heptagon’s time of flight packaging work (to be combined with ams’ IC design and sensors). As mentioned by ams in a recent call, it would have the scale to ramp up production of this part to meet high volume demands in a way that Heptagon could not. SiTime success continues to push MEMS timing into Apple and the mainstreamSeptember 14, 2016SiTime is the leading supplier of MEMS timing parts with success in consumer and industrial applications. It finds itself in a position where it is pulling away from its main competition, Microchip (Discera), while other competitors like IDT and SiLabs no longer advertise MEMS timing. Sand 9’s acquisition by ADI is likely to make ADI self-sufficient for timing and perhaps a timing supplier in the future. In 2015, SiTime won a KHz MEMS oscillator part (SiT1552) in the Apple Watch and Apple Pencil. In 2016, SiTime won a MHz oscillator part... Please sign in for the rest of the article.Subscribers Only

Apple's latest iPhone reflects and leads sensor hub trendsDecember 15, 2015Sensor hubs are an important part of mid to high end smartphones. This is in line with increasing demands of sensors in smartphones, such as always on sensors (motion and audio) and tight battery constraints. The two main approaches to sensor hubs so far have been discrete MCUs and low power cores or processing elements integrated into application processors. Up to 2015, Samsung and Apple are the leaders in MCU adoption for sensor processing in their smartphones. While Qualcomm is leading supplier of application processor integrated sensor processing solutions with its Hexagon DSP. Apple’s iPhone 6S heralds the direction sensor hubs will take in smartphones from the high end all the way to the low end in coming years. For more please log in to your account.Subscribers Only

Apple Becomes the Top Sensor Manufacturer in Value for Mobile DevicesNovember 05, 2015Apple has largely contributed to the boom of the sensor market in the last 8 years as a user. It has established the use of motion sensors, light sensors and fingerprint sensors in smartphones. Apple became the top consumer of sensors in mobile devices ahead of Samsung in 2010 and it has kept this position ever since. Last year Apple also became the top manufacturer of sensors in value for mobile devices capturing 29% of this market and jumping ahead of STMicroelectronics. This surge in value is thanks to its fingerprint sensors.
