Quantum communicationFebruary 22, 2017Quantum computing, although still in its initial stages, is not a myth anymore and the first commercial deployments should be available in the next 10-15 years. It is still a work in progress but several large corporations including NASA, Google, IBM and Microsoft have all publicly announced investments in quantum computing research. First dedicated satellite for the banking industryAugust 17, 2016In July 2016, an Indonesian bank BRI (Bank Riakyat Indonesia) became the first bank in the world to own its dedicated satellite. The satellite, named BRIsat, was launched to provide communications for BRI’s banking services and business operations. BRIsat was launched to allow for the bank to reach to additional customers, support existing clients and transmit information in real time as they need to instantly update their internal accounts. Rovi acquires TiVoMay 04, 2016The heavens have aligned for two of the media-and-entertainment industry’s technology giants. Analytics, program guide and IP-licensing kingpin Rovi will acquire OTT software, UI pioneer and DVR progenitor TiVo. Terrestrial TV and WRC-15January 17, 2016Terrestrial television provision is a vital component in today’s technology industry, contributing revenues of $5.5 billion, which is expected to increase by a further $1.8 billion by 2020. On top of this with the ITU setting a 'soft' analogue switch off (ASO) and digital switch over (DSO) date of the 17th of June 2015 for its Regions, service providers all over the world have been decommissioning old analogue technologies and investing in installing digital equipment, in the anticipation that they will be able to offer a greater quality of service to their existing customer base over at least the next decade. However, it was predicted long before 2015, that many countries will not be able to set their digital transmissions up in the next several years, hence, they could not meet the ITU’s deadline.

IBM acquires ClearleapDecember 16, 2015IBM has agreed to acquire Clearleap, a US based company who provides over-the-top (OTT) video solutions to the media sector. Clearleap’s OTT stack and SaaS solutions will be integrated into the IBM Cloud platform, and collectively, the combined portfolio will be positioned to help media companies reduce the complexity and expense of delivering digital content.
