Dish Strengthens VoD with Blockbuster, Epix DealsApril 07, 2011After lagging behind DirecTV, Dish Network is determined strengthen its presence in the video-on-demand (VoD) arena by any means necessary. This week has seen two significant announcements: partnership with Epix to license its content on DishOnline.com, and a bid for Blockbuster. The partnership with Epix is a TV Everywhere style deal whereby Dish customers would have access to Epix's library of 3,000 titles from Dish's website. Dish also delivered the highest bid to acquire Blockbuster, offering $320m to bring the video chain out of bankruptcy.

Netflix in Talks to Fund First Original TV SeriesMarch 16, 2011US subscription video provider Netflix is in talks to finance its first original content - a high-end drama series its producers have pitched to other possible partners, including pay TV network HBO. Reports indicate that the company is negotiating to produce two 26-part series of House of Cards, produced by Media Rights Capital and directed by David Fincher. Netflix itself has so far made no comment. The political drama is based on a series first aired by the BBC in the 1990s.

Spanish Anti-Piracy Law Finally PassedMarch 16, 2011
Spanish parliament has voted through the much-debated anti-piracy law, known as the Ley Sinde, part of the larger Sustainable Economy Law (SEL). An earlier version of the law was rejected by the opposition in December 2010, forcing the government to submit an amended version of the law; it is this latest version that has now been fully approved by a majority of parliamentary parties and the Spanish Senate.
The amended version of the Ley Sinde shifts the ultimate responsibility for authorising enforcement from the proposed Ministry of Culture body overseeing the legislation (called the Intellectual Property Committee, IPC) to the judicial courts. -

Amazon Adds Streaming Video Service for Prime MembersMarch 02, 2011Amazon has launched its Prime Instant Video service, which allows Amazon Prime members to stream more than 5,000 movies and episodes of TV shows at no additional cost. The service will form part of Amazon Prime, the retailer's premium shipping service which gives members free two-day shipping, and offers discounted one-day shipping for $3.99 per item on all eligible purchases for an annual membership fee of $79. Prime launches with 16 content partners including major studios like Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures, as well as indies Magnolia, IFC and Shout Factory.

Time Warner has reaffirmed its commitment to launch a premium video-on-demand (VoD) service in Q2 2011. Premium video-on-demand, known also as 'home-theater on-demand', enables viewers to watch movies at home 30-60 days after theatrical release date, and weeks or months before release on DVD, Blu-ray and standard video on-demand (VoD). The company plans to charge consumers from $30 to $50 per film, which will be available in HD and eventually in 3D.

Universal Standard in Sight for 3D TV Glasses?October 01, 2010The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) in the US has called on TV manufacturers to support a universal standard for active shutter 3D glasses to minimise consumer confusion over the new technology and boost take-up. The organisation's R4 WG16 working group has been working with CE companies, including Sony and Samsung, to develop a standard for infra-red active shutter glasses and hopes to release the first draft specification in November 2010, with a view to it being adopted by manufacturers early in 2011.
