Cable Homes in Europe Reached 69.2 Million in 2017 – the Highest Level Since 2009, IHS Markit SaysNovember 07, 2018The number of cable homes in Europe once again grew year on year in 2017, reaching 69.2 million and comprising 36.3 percent of all television households. This was the largest number of cable homes in Europe since 2009, when the figure stood at 70 million.

Tele2 and Com Hem to create combined fixed and mobile operator in SwedenJanuary 11, 2018Tele2 and Com Hem are to combine their businesses in Sweden, creating an integrated fixed and mobile operator. As part of the agreement, Com Hem shareholders will receive around 26.9% ownership of the enlarged Tele2 Sweden, and a total cash consideration of SKr 6.6 billion ($0.8 billion). Despite Com Hem’s minority ownership of the new business, Com Hem’s existing CEO, Anders Nilsson, will be in charge of the combined entity.

Television Market Monitor – European pay TV Q2 2015 updateNovember 17, 2015Total pay TV subscribers increased by just 0.4% in Europe in Q2 2015, representing the slowest rate of growth in the region as a whole since Q3 2010. Pay TV declined in 11 markets in the quarter. In most of these cases, particularly the Nordic markets and the Netherlands, this was part of continuing trend of quarterly pay TV losses. In Romania however, the quarterly decline ended a period of consistent growth. Two of Europe's largest pay TV markets, the UK and Spain, exhibited some of the highest growth in the region in Q2 2015. Now TV helps Sky turn in best Q1 growth in the UK and Ireland in 11 yearsApril 21, 2015Sky added 242,000 new customers in the quarter ending 31 March - close to 70% more additions than the same quarter of 2013. In its second quarterly set of results as a pan-European operator spanning five countries, Sky said it sold one million products and reported its strongest Q1 in the UK and Ireland in 11 years. In the three months since December 2014, total customers in the UK and Ireland increased by 1.08% to 11,877,000. This was a 4% increase on Q1 2014, and encompasses Sky’s entire product offering, including subscription OTT (over-the-top) TV service Now TV. The operator reported year-on-year growth of 30% for Now TV, which suggests it has been a key driver. Sky also saw improvements in its total customer base in Germany and Italy.

Swedish Com Hem continues steady turnaround in digital TV growthFebruary 10, 2015Swedish cable operator Com Hem has seen improved digital subscriber growth following a period of slowdown. The fourth quarter of 2014 saw 1.7% growth on the previous quarter, with digital subscribers standing at 617,598. Year-on-year, this was a growth of 3.5%, reversing the decline of 2.5% experienced in 2013.

Sky reports Q4 customer growth in first combined set of resultsFebruary 04, 2015Across its three key businesses, Sky ended 2014 with an increased retail customer base of 20,607,000 – up 4.3% on Q4 2013. The entire pay TV group also experienced 4.9% year-on-year growth in subscription revenue to £4,842 million (€6 million) for the six months ending 31 December 2014. The group’s results were boosted both by strong performance in the UK and Ireland and the addition of its German and Italian businesses.

Liberty Global completes Ziggo purchase as Dutch cable decline continuesNovember 06, 2014Liberty Global is set to complete its purchase of Dutch cable operator Ziggo this month after meeting minimum acceptance conditions for its offer for the 80% of shares it does not already own.Liberty said it would delist Ziggo shares from Euronext Amsterdam following completion. With Ziggo and its existing UPC Dutch operations, Liberty will control 90.6% of the Dutch cable market, strengthening its position in a country which has suffered a cable downturn in recent quarters.

Liberty Global wins regulatory approval for Ziggo buyOctober 10, 2014Liberty Global has obtained regulatory approval from the European Commission (EC) for its agreement to purchase the shares in Dutch cable operator Ziggo that it does not already own. The US-based cable company has made concessions at the request of the EC, which involve the divestment of its Film1 channel business, and behavioural commitments in relation to its contracts with broadcasters. Liberty now only needs acceptance from Ziggo shareholders to complete its acquisition of the Dutch cable operator.

TDC enters Norway consumer sector with Get acquisitionSeptember 15, 2014TDC has agreed to buy cable operator Get for Nkr13.8 billion (€1.8 billion), marking the Danish company’s entry into the Norwegian consumer sector. The acquisition of Get represents a fairly major shift in strategy for TDC, after several years of slimming down its operations and international divestments. The Danish incumbent has stated that it will gain half a million new customers in Norway as a result of the deal.

Providence sells on expanded satellite pay TV groupJuly 29, 2014Private equity group Astorg Partners is to acquire a majority stake in pan-regional DTH (direct-to-home) satellite operator the M7 Group. The stake will be purchased from Providence Equity Partners, which has held its stake in the company since 2007. Since Providence’s purchase of its stake in M7 in 2007, the satellite group has expanded into different markets and diversified its operations to incorporate both pay TV and technological services.

Belgian cable operator Telenet to acquire stake in SBS Belgium channelsJune 18, 2014Belgian cable operator Telenet is to purchase 50% of De Vijver Media, the owner of SBS Belgium’s Vier and Vijf TV channels. In contrast to the premium channels Telenet currently owns, Vier and Vijf are commercial channels predominantly funded by advertising.

Swedish cable operator Com Hem announces Initial Public OfferingMay 23, 2014Swedish cable operator Com Hem is to launch an Initial Public Offering on the Stockholm stock exchange. The offering will largely consist of new ordinary shares. Com Hem expects to raise a total of SKr5.5 billion (€551 million) through the IPO, and intends to use the net proceeds to improve its debt standing. Com Hem’s decision to increase its funds through equity follows significant investments made by the company in digital TV and broadband, as well as its entry into B2B (business-to-business).

Satellite operator M7 Group to purchase German channel business KabelKioskMay 21, 2014Satellite operator Eutelsat is to sell Kabelkiosk, its German channel distribution service, to Luxembourg's M7 Group. The sale, the amount of which was undisclosed, marks a change for M7, which since its inception has largely focused on operating DTH (direct-to-home) satellite platforms.
