Netflix goes global in one fell swoop, launching in 130 new territoriesJanuary 11, 2016Netflix has executed its global expansion plan by launching in 130 new territories simultaneously. The online-video streaming giant made the announcement at the CES conference and trade show in Las Vegas on 6th January 2015. The US company, which launched its streaming service in the US in 2007, now claims to be available in almost every country worldwide, with exceptions including China, Syria and North Korea. MTG sells central and eastern Europe pay TV channelsOctober 26, 2015MTG has agreed to sell its central and eastern Europe (CEE) pay TV channel operations for $45.5 million. Sabiero Holdings Ltd, controlled by private equity firm Baring Vostok, has acquired the CEE channels while the Russian segment has been purchased by LLC Sinerdzhi. The Russian channel operations include all the factual and cinema channels while the international segment includes all the pan-regional feeds and the TV1000 movie networks. The deal does not include any of MTG’s sports channels -with the exception of Viasat Sport East, the global Trace, or MTG’s free-to-air operations.Subscribers Only

ESPN returns to India in partnership with SonyOctober 12, 2015Sports network ESPN has announced a partnership with Multi Screen Media (MSM), the Indian unit of Sony Pictures Television, to create co-branded sports content on both television and digital platforms. CTC Media agrees deal with UTH as Russian sell-offs continueSeptember 25, 2015CTC Media has accepted an offer from UTH Russia to purchase 75% of its business in Russia and Kazakhstan for $200 million. CTC Media was forced to sell the assets in order to comply with an amendment to the Russian ‘On Mass Media’ law, which will impose a 20% non-Russian ownership cap of Russian television companies beginning on 1 January 2016. Currently over 70% of the company is foreign-owned. Modern Times Group (MTG) owns the largest share of the media company (37.9%). Launched in 2003 as a DVD-by-post service, Quickflix launched a Subscription Video on Demand (SVoD) streaming service in Australia during October 2011 followed by the expansion of its streaming service to New Zealand in May 2012. PCCW challenges TVB in Hong Kong broadcasting marketMay 19, 2015Hong Kong’s market-leading terrestrial television broadcaster, TVB has been granted renewal of its domestic free-to-air (FTA) broadcasting service licence for 12 years until 2027.
