Korean broadcasters join forces with SK Telecom to step up original content productionJanuary 28, 2019Korean telco SK Telecom has signed a memorandum of understanding with the country's three leading broadcasters to integrate their online video platforms, Oksusu and POOQ. Broadcasters Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) and Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) operate POOQ through a joint venture called Content Alliance Platform. The new service will aim to create more local original content to fend off growing competition. According to reports, SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-Ho was seeking an initial investment of $180 million to produce original content; in comparison, Oksusu spent just $10 million on content last year. The company also aims to expand the new online video platform to Southeast Asia later in the year.

Comcast becomes first US pay TV operator to partner with AmazonAugust 03, 2018Comcast has secured a deal with Amazon to carry the latter’s Prime Video SVoD service on Comcast’s Xfinity X1 pay TV platform. The leading cable provider is the first US operator to announce such a deal with Amazon, and only the third globally, after Israel's Partner Communications and UK telco BT. The Prime Video app will be made available to Xfinity TV customers in the second half of 2018, giving them access to Amazon’s Prime Originals series, titles for rental and purchase, and more than 160 Prime Video Channels, including Showtime and Starz – all searchable via voice control using the X1 Voice Remote. Customers will also be able to watch a growing selection of content in 4K UHD and HDR. Disney launches ESPN’s long awaited direct to consumer offerApril 17, 2018Disney has launched online subscription service ESPN+, which will feature 10,000 live MLB, NHL and other live events. Comcast intends to outbid 21st Century Fox for ownership of SkyFebruary 27, 2018US cable giant Comcast has unveiled a possible takeover offer for Sky, aiming to outbid 21st Century Fox. Comcast today made an all-cash offer of £12.50 per share in cash for the UK-based satellite operator, which represents a 16% increase on 21st Century Fox’s offer, implying a valuation of £22.1 billion ($28.5 billion). Fox, which already owns a 39% stake in Sky, offered £18.5 billion ($23.8 billion) to acquire the shares in the operator that it does not own.

Growth in OTT video in 2017 fails to offset the continued decline in US pay TV subscribersFebruary 20, 2018Full year results for key TV operators in the US have shown that subscriptions to linear pay TV services are continuing to decline. Subscriptions to TV and online video services are estimated to have fallen by 675,000 subscribers over 2017 – a year-on-year decline of 0.7%. This represents an improvement on the previous year, which saw declines of over one million pay TV subscribers. The year did see growth in broadband-delivered live TV services such as DIRECTV Now, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue, however.

HBO licenses content to Amazon Prime Video in JapanFebruary 05, 2018HBO signed a content deal with Amazon in January 2018 to license 50 HBO series on Amazon Prime Video in Japan. Existing Prime subscribers will be able to watch HBO shows, including Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, The Sopranos and The Wire, without having to pay an additional fee. HBO content will be available on Amazon Prime Video in Japan starting April 1, 2018. Details on the duration of the deal are undisclosed.
