Comcast to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 gatewayMay 28, 2015Comcast is to deploy a DOCSIS 3.1 gigabit Home Gateway. It will also be compatible with Comcast’s current hybrid fiber-coax network, and is backwards compatible with the current DOCSIS 3.0 infrastructure. The gateway will be capable of delivering gigabit bandwidth speeds over dual channel 802.11n/ac Wi-Fi, and will feature Reference Design Kit Broadband software. ARRIS consolidates market leading position with Pace acquisitionApril 27, 2015US Cable TV technology supplier ARRIS intends to acquire British set-top box (STB) vendor Pace, for USD 2.1B; valuing Pace’s business at 80% of its 2014 revenue. The acquisition will create the world’s largest supplier of set-top box (STB), broadband gateway and cable TV technology. Combined 2014 revenues of USD 7.9B make will it twice the size of its nearest competitor, Cisco’s Service Provider Video business unit. Comcast takes app-first approach for UHD launchJanuary 20, 2015Comcast has become the second US pay TV operator to launch a UHD service, following DirecTV’s launch in November 2014. Comcast’s UHD offering is available to lower-resolution subscribers of that content at no extra charge, but currently only accessible on 2014 Samsung UHD TV models, through the “Xfinity in UHD” app. Comcast’s initial UHD content offer is comprised of TV series from its media subsidiaries, NBCUniversal and USA Networks. Two TV series will be made available in UHD at launch, with a full catalogue to be deployed in 2015, as well as a separate UHD set-top box (STB).
