Iflix secures a new round of funding ahead of a prospective IPOJuly 26, 2019Malaysia-based online video streaming service iflix has announced that it has secured a new round of funding ahead of a prospective IPO. The company estimated that the total funding will amount to more than $50 million, although an exact amount has not been disclosed. The funding round was led by Fidelity International, while new investors are MNC, Yoshimoto Kogyo and JTBC, together with founder Catcha Group, and strategic shareholders Hearst, Sky and EMC. Iflix is currently available in 12 countries in Asia – Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Korean broadcasters join forces with SK Telecom to step up original content productionJanuary 28, 2019Korean telco SK Telecom has signed a memorandum of understanding with the country's three leading broadcasters to integrate their online video platforms, Oksusu and POOQ. Broadcasters Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) and Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) operate POOQ through a joint venture called Content Alliance Platform. The new service will aim to create more local original content to fend off growing competition. According to reports, SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-Ho was seeking an initial investment of $180 million to produce original content; in comparison, Oksusu spent just $10 million on content last year. The company also aims to expand the new online video platform to Southeast Asia later in the year.

HBO licenses content to Amazon Prime Video in JapanFebruary 05, 2018HBO signed a content deal with Amazon in January 2018 to license 50 HBO series on Amazon Prime Video in Japan. Existing Prime subscribers will be able to watch HBO shows, including Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, The Sopranos and The Wire, without having to pay an additional fee. HBO content will be available on Amazon Prime Video in Japan starting April 1, 2018. Details on the duration of the deal are undisclosed.
