iQIYI Q2 2019 results highlight challenging advertising environment in ChinaAugust 22, 2019iQIYI reported a 15% increase in revenues for the quarter ended 30 June, totaled RMB 7.1 billion (USD 1 billion). • Membership services grew 38% to RMB 3.4 billion (USD 479 million) • Online advertising services dropped 16% to RMB 2.2 billion (USD 310 million) • Content distribution was down 4% to RMB 0.5 billion (USD 70 million) • Others category grew 82% to RMB 1 billion (USD 141 million) The company attributed the continued overall revenue growth to the solid subscription growth; while admitted that the challenging macroeconomic conditions and delayed content launches had slowed online advertising and content distribution revenue growth. “Others” revenues benefitted from the company’s acquisition of game company Skymoons.

Most US CE Import Tariffs Delayed ... except TVsAugust 13, 2019On August 13th, 2019, the Office of the US Trade Representative announced that it was delaying the implementation of new 10% tariffs on some products that had been scheduled to go into effect on September 1st. Of the $300 billion tranche that was originally to be affected, CE products were some of the most prominent new inclusions, and surely would have impacted prices during the upcoming holiday season. The categories included in the delay entail smartphones, Notebook PCs, tablet PCs, game consoles and desktop monitors, along with other popular holiday shopping goods. However, TVs were not included on the list, and remain to be subject to the additional 10% tariff on September 1st. Of course, this could change.

Netflix acquires worldwide rights to second Youku TV seriesMay 15, 2019Netflix has acquired a second original series from Chinese streaming platform Youku. I Hear You, produced and owned jointly by Alibaba-owned Youku and Chinese film studio Sugarent Film & TV, will be made available by Netflix to subscribers in all 190 markets today (15 May). In China, the 24-episode romantic comedy was premiered simultaneously on streaming platforms Youku and Mango TV on 28 January 2019. Netflix acquired Day and Night in 2017.

China media watchdog continues to tighten control over foreign contentOctober 05, 2018The National Administration of TV and Radio (NATR), the newly formed Chinese media regulator, has published a draft discussion of the Provisions on Administration of Import and Broadcasting of Overseas Audio-Visual Programs. Netflix partners with OSN to grow its MENA subscriber baseFebruary 19, 2018MENA pay TV operator OSN has announced the signing of a partnership with Netflix. This deal is the first between Netflix and a pay TV operator across the MENA region. As a result of the partnership, OSN satellite subscribers will be able to access Netflix via a new hybrid set-top box, which OSN plans to launch at the end of the second quarter of 2018. Spotify and Tencent Agree “Strategic Collaboration”December 05, 2017Spotify and Tencent have agreed a share swap and investment deal. The exact terms between the streaming music company and the Chinese internet giant have not been revealed but industry publications have reported that under the deal Spotify and Tencent Music Entertainment TME) will get 10% of each other’s businesses. TME, which is majority-owned by Tencent is the leading music streaming service in China powering offers from QQ Music, KuGou and Kuwo. In addition to the stock swap Tencent has acquired a stake in Spotify by purchasing shares from existing backers.
