iQIYI Q2 2019 results highlight challenging advertising environment in ChinaAugust 22, 2019iQIYI reported a 15% increase in revenues for the quarter ended 30 June, totaled RMB 7.1 billion (USD 1 billion). • Membership services grew 38% to RMB 3.4 billion (USD 479 million) • Online advertising services dropped 16% to RMB 2.2 billion (USD 310 million) • Content distribution was down 4% to RMB 0.5 billion (USD 70 million) • Others category grew 82% to RMB 1 billion (USD 141 million) The company attributed the continued overall revenue growth to the solid subscription growth; while admitted that the challenging macroeconomic conditions and delayed content launches had slowed online advertising and content distribution revenue growth. “Others” revenues benefitted from the company’s acquisition of game company Skymoons.

Mediaset builds on partnership with ProSiebenSat1 with $380 million share purchaseMay 30, 2019Mediaset has acquired a 9.6% stake in Germany's ProSieben.Sat1, in a move it describes as 'an investment in the future of European free-to-air television'. Yesterday's acquisition of shares on the open market also gives the Italian group a 9.9 share of the voting capital. Netflix acquires worldwide rights to second Youku TV seriesMay 15, 2019Netflix has acquired a second original series from Chinese streaming platform Youku. I Hear You, produced and owned jointly by Alibaba-owned Youku and Chinese film studio Sugarent Film & TV, will be made available by Netflix to subscribers in all 190 markets today (15 May). In China, the 24-episode romantic comedy was premiered simultaneously on streaming platforms Youku and Mango TV on 28 January 2019. Netflix acquired Day and Night in 2017.

Struggling Eleven Sports UK sheds further sports rightsJanuary 31, 2019Eleven Sports will continue to show exclusive coverage of Spain’s La Liga in the UK and Ireland, but will lose the Italian Serie A and Dutch Eredivisie from the end of this month. Eleven Sports said the move follows a ‘strategic decision to end our partnership with IMG’—the agency managing the rights. Eleven Sports, which launched online-only in the UK and Ireland in August, said it intended to continue offering La Liga beyond the current season. The operator agreed three-year deals for the UK rights to La Liga and Serie A starting from the 2018/19 season.

China media watchdog continues to tighten control over foreign contentOctober 05, 2018The National Administration of TV and Radio (NATR), the newly formed Chinese media regulator, has published a draft discussion of the Provisions on Administration of Import and Broadcasting of Overseas Audio-Visual Programs. The provisions will aim to regulate the distribution of foreign content, including movies, TV shows, animation and documentaries. Media industry players were invited to comment on the draft until 19 October 2018.

Comcast wins Sky battle with £30.6 billion offerSeptember 24, 2018Comcast has outbid 21st Century Fox to win control of Sky, with an offer valuing the UK-based pay TV group at £30.6 billion ($40 billion). In the third and final round of the auction run by the UK's takeover panel on Saturday 22 September, Comcast made a final offer of £17.28 per Sky share, trumping a bid of £15.67 from Fox. Comcast launched its challenge for Sky in April with an initial offer of £12.50, valuing Sky at £22 million. Sky shares closed at £15.85 last Friday.Subscribers Only

Fox increases offer for full control of SkyJuly 11, 201821st Century Fox has raised its offer for the 61% of Sky it does not own to £14 a share, valuing the company at £24.5 billion ($32.5 billion). The offer is 30% more than the price it originally offered in December 2016, and is 12% more than the competing offer for the pay TV business lodged by Comcast in June. The new development in the long-running saga of the Fox takeover of Sky comes as the UK Government is about to make a decision on whether to approve the deal. Walt Disney Co is planning to acquire most of 21st Century Fox, including its Sky shareholding, but is also facing competition from Comcast. Amazon and BT buy remaining Premier League packagesJune 07, 2018Continuing its move into live streaming sport, Amazon has acquired a package of rights to the Premier League in the UK from 2019 to 2022. Amazon was awarded a package of 20 live matches per season, including 10 played on Boxing Day and 10 in midweek. Completing a long-drawn out process that began with the award of rights to BT and Sky in February, the Premier League awarded the last remaining package to BT.

UK approves potential Fox, Comcast bids for SkyJune 05, 2018The UK government will allow 21st Century Fox to go through with its bid to acquire the 61% of the company it does not own, on condition that it sells Sky News. Matt Hancock, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, announced the decision yesterday following a long running investigation by UK regulators which raised concerns over media plurality. The government also approved a rival bid by Comcast for Sky. The decisions pave the way for a bidding war between Fox and Comcast for ownership with Sky, with Walt Disney Co also likely to be involved.Subscribers Only
