Spain and Italy provide DTT subsidies to accelerate the release of 5G spectrumJuly 31, 2019The Spanish government approved in June 2019 a package of €150 million in state-aid to facilitate digital terrestrial television (DTT) migration for the second time in the country. The money will go to local communities to finance the retuning of TV antennas as DTT broadcasters will relinquish frequencies in the 694-790 MHz UHF band for 5G services. Spaniards must retune their antennas, as all DTT channels must move to frequencies below 694 MHz by June 2020. The spectrum between 694 and 790 MHz, the so-called 700 MHz, will be auctioned to mobile broadband operators, by the end of 2020 to facilitate the launch of 5G services in Spain. Meanwhile, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development has issued a list of guidelines for the provision of subsidies to buy TV sets and DTT set-top boxes compatible with the DVB-T2 HEVC standard. The pay-out of €151 million in subsidies commence in November 2019. The guidelines propose that Italian residents on social benefits receive a refund or rebate of €50 per household, for the purchase of a single device by December 31st, 2022 or until the allocated resources are exhausted. The aid will be granted on the principle of technological neutrality. The Italian government has committed to ceasing all DVB-T DTT transmissions and switching to DVB-T2 by June 2022. The European Commission has decided that the state-aid schemes of Spain and Italy are in line with EU state-aid rules and subsequently granted its approval.Subscribers Only

Mediaset builds on partnership with ProSiebenSat1 with $380 million share purchaseMay 30, 2019Mediaset has acquired a 9.6% stake in Germany's ProSieben.Sat1, in a move it describes as 'an investment in the future of European free-to-air television'. OSN to launch new flexible package and cut expensive sports programmingFebruary 22, 2019OSN, the Dubai-based pay TV operator, has officially launched a new TV service in Saudi Arabia and a number of Gulf countries. The new service, called El Farq, which means “The Difference” in Arabic, is a flexible entertainment package that does not tie up the subscriber with a long-term contract. El Farq offers monthly renewal options, precisely like the main OTT subscription services all around the globe. OSN claims El Farq will provide its subscribers in Saudi Arabia with value for money for several main reasons. First, because of its content offering which includes all six premium OSN film channels, out of a total of 56 channels for the whole package. Second because the price of 159 Saudi riyals ($43) per month is the cheapest price ever offered for an OSN high-tier package. Finally, OSN claims El Farq provides the subscriber with the option of a simple online purchase process and guarantees the latest children’s, lifestyle, movies and TV series programming for the whole family. Separately, OSN is shutting off most of its sports channels in an effort to better control programming costs. The operator will retain only the its cricket-programming channels OSN Sports Cricket HD and its bouquet of TEN Sports channels. Struggling Eleven Sports UK sheds further sports rightsJanuary 31, 2019Eleven Sports will continue to show exclusive coverage of Spain’s La Liga in the UK and Ireland, but will lose the Italian Serie A and Dutch Eredivisie from the end of this month. Eleven Sports said the move follows a ‘strategic decision to end our partnership with IMG’—the agency managing the rights. Eleven Sports, which launched online-only in the UK and Ireland in August, said it intended to continue offering La Liga beyond the current season. The operator agreed three-year deals for the UK rights to La Liga and Serie A starting from the 2018/19 season.

Comcast wins Sky battle with £30.6 billion offerSeptember 24, 2018Comcast has outbid 21st Century Fox to win control of Sky, with an offer valuing the UK-based pay TV group at £30.6 billion ($40 billion). In the third and final round of the auction run by the UK's takeover panel on Saturday 22 September, Comcast made a final offer of £17.28 per Sky share, trumping a bid of £15.67 from Fox.
