Game console hardware – Q3 2019November 22, 2019After the end of Q3, the competitive dynamic of the global console hardware market is pretty defined for the full year, with only the Black Friday sales bonanza or potential stock shortages perhaps generating any sell-through surprises in Q4. With most of the annual sales taking place during the final quarter of the year, the scale of sell-through volume will depend on bundling offers or price drops and how long these are maintained in the market.Subscribers Only

Trending: Onshoring electric motor production supports demand for EVs and HEVsOctober 11, 2019Half a decade ago the production of traction motors for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles was concentrated in the home location of the Automotive OEM. This was simply because the demand for EV/HEVs was not worth the investment of building new facilities close to the demand location. However, the rapid growth in demand for EVs in the recent years is gradually influencing the supply chain, companies’ business models, and encouraging more collaboration and joint ventures in the automotive industry. In the Chinese market, joint ventures between traditionally large western OEMs who wish to enter the Chinese market and local vendors are becoming more commonplace. The most recent announcement was in August 2019 about the joint venture between Nidec – a Japanese electric motor company – and GAC Motor – a Chinese vehicle manufacturer – to produce traction motors.

Airtel Africa's growth continues offsetting loses of parent companySeptember 30, 2019In late August 2019, Airtel Africa passed the 100 million subscribers mark in Africa for the first time. This milestone is impressive since its parent company, Bharti Airtel has been struggling in its core market of India. Bharti Airtel has spent billions to upgrade its LTE network and defend its market share against a hostile competitor, Reliance Jio. However, Airtel’s strategy of fending off Jio has failed as the latter has been able to gain market share by building an extensive 4G network coupled with extremely low entry level prices. For instance, in the last 2 years Bharti Airtel subscribers in India have declined from 381 million in 2017 to the current figure of 324 million. In contrast during the same 2-year period, Airtel Africa’s subsidiaries added 20 million subscribers. Indeed, Bharti Airtel is becoming increasingly dependent on the continued growth of its Africa operations.Subscribers Only

Spain and Italy provide DTT subsidies to accelerate the release of 5G spectrumJuly 31, 2019The Spanish government approved in June 2019 a package of €150 million in state-aid to facilitate digital terrestrial television (DTT) migration for the second time in the country. The money will go to local communities to finance the retuning of TV antennas as DTT broadcasters will relinquish frequencies in the 694-790 MHz UHF band for 5G services. Spaniards must retune their antennas, as all DTT channels must move to frequencies below 694 MHz by June 2020. The spectrum between 694 and 790 MHz, the so-called 700 MHz, will be auctioned to mobile broadband operators, by the end of 2020 to facilitate the launch of 5G services in Spain. Meanwhile, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development has issued a list of guidelines for the provision of subsidies to buy TV sets and DTT set-top boxes compatible with the DVB-T2 HEVC standard. The pay-out of €151 million in subsidies commence in November 2019. The guidelines propose that Italian residents on social benefits receive a refund or rebate of €50 per household, for the purchase of a single device by December 31st, 2022 or until the allocated resources are exhausted. The aid will be granted on the principle of technological neutrality. The Italian government has committed to ceasing all DVB-T DTT transmissions and switching to DVB-T2 by June 2022. The European Commission has decided that the state-aid schemes of Spain and Italy are in line with EU state-aid rules and subsequently granted its approval.Subscribers Only

MTN Nigeria in the firing line, againApril 30, 2019In 2018, MTN's Nigeria unit has continued to fall foul of the Federal government of Nigeria with fines being levied against MTN by both the Attorney General's office and the Central Bank of Nigeria. On 4th September 2018, Nigeria’s Federal government via the Attorney General’s office demanded that MTN pay USD $2 billion in tax arrears on imported equipment and payments to suppliers dating back a decade. MTN Group instead responded by filing for an injunction at the High Court and pointing to its total payments of around $700 million, over this same 10-year period, to fully settle said tax arrears.Subscribers Only

Uganda’s government puts pressure on MTN to repatriate profits and list locallyMarch 20, 2019In February 2019, MTN's Uganda unit faced unprecedented pressure from the government of Uganda. This pressure took the form of numerous MTN Uganda executives being abruptly deported from the country on the grounds that they posed a threat to Uganda's national security. However, in reality, these unilateral actions by Uganda's government was most likely driven by the Office of the President which has accused MTN Uganda of repatriating profits outside of Uganda without the state's permission. Another source of agitation from the government's side is MTN Uganda's constant delay in setting out a timeline of when the telco would list on Uganda's local bourse.Subscribers Only
