Most US CE Import Tariffs Delayed ... except TVsAugust 13, 2019On August 13th, 2019, the Office of the US Trade Representative announced that it was delaying the implementation of new 10% tariffs on some products that had been scheduled to go into effect on September 1st. Of the $300 billion tranche that was originally to be affected, CE products were some of the most prominent new inclusions, and surely would have impacted prices during the upcoming holiday season. The categories included in the delay entail smartphones, Notebook PCs, tablet PCs, game consoles and desktop monitors, along with other popular holiday shopping goods. However, TVs were not included on the list, and remain to be subject to the additional 10% tariff on September 1st. Of course, this could change.

Sam's Club Kicks Off 2018 US TV Selling SeasonOctober 30, 2018Each year, usually a few weeks prior to Black Friday in early November, retailers are eager to be the first to start attracting eager buyers ahead of the official start of the holiday shopping season. These early promotions seem to attract a decent amount of buying interest, especially if the retailer is less likely to participate as aggressively during Black Friday. Sam's Club, a member-only US warehouse club retailer, has published the circular advertisement for their November 10th One Day Savings Event. TVs are predictably a prominent feature of the sale, and we break down how this might be very early indicators of Black Friday pricing.Subscribers Only

The final list included more then 800 products, and an additional 280 were proposed pending public comment, totaling $50 billion in imports. TVs were initially on the list of products, causing panic among the CE industry, but intense lobbying led to TVs being dropped from the list of products.Subscribers Only

Fire TV returns to the battleApril 25, 2018After a weak launch in 2017, Amazon has struck a deal with Best Buy to relaunch the Fire TV platform. Starting summer 2018, Best Buy will start selling Toshiba and Insignia Fire TV Edition Smart TVs, which will also be available on Amazon.com with Best Buy as a third party seller. This has several implications for the smart TV space, but especially for companies like Roku because Insignia was previously using the Roku TV platform and was one of the larger partners last year. For Amazon, it also represents a recognition that the brick and mortar space is still very important for some categories where consumers still prefer to "kick the tires" before purchasing.Subscribers Only

Impact of Proposed China Tariffs on US TV MarketApril 06, 2018On April 4th, the US Office of the Trade Representative published a list of 1,300 products that could be subjected to an additional 25% import tariff if coming from China. Flat panel TVs are included on this list, and given the very low margins on the bulk of entry level TVs, and the fact that many of the smaller in mid-sized TVs are imported fully assembled from China, it could have a very big impact on the entire TV market. The attached report breaks down the details of the possible tariff, and the impacts on the supply chain, as well as possible reactions. Of course, it is important to note that this list of products is under a 60 day review process, and we expect heavy lobbying on the part of manufacturers and trade organizations. The outcome or final list could change before the end of May.Subscribers Only

Early Observations from Black Friday 2017 - TVsNovember 26, 2017As is our tradition, IHS Markit ventured out on Black Friday (including Thanksgiving night) to observe the start of the holiday shopping season. Overall, traffic was comparable to a year ago, if slightly lower in some less prominent locations. Online sales are sure to have an impact on store traffic, but overall sales may very well be higher due to a strong economy and good employment. For the TV category, the outlook is a bit more muted with prices on par with a year ago, and it takes big discounts to get consumers excited about TVs nowadays. Our analysis published a week ago highlights our take on the advertisements, so this analysis is focused more on the feel of the start of the Holiday using a very informal store visit methodology.Subscribers Only

Impact of Cancellation of LeEco-Vizio AcquisitionApril 12, 2017In April 2017, LeEco and Vizio announced jointly that the $2 billion acquisition of Vizio by LeEco would no longer proceed. Instead, the two companies would pursue some limited strategic partnerships. What are the implications of this? Certainly in the short term, we do not see a major impact on Vizio's North America TV business, but there may be a long term challenge for expansion beyond the North America market without finding alternate sources of capital, either though another private investment opportunity or via public options. For LeEco, this is a significant blow to the prospect of gaining a rapid foothold in the US market, and continued indications of financial challenges represent an ongoing difficulty. The attached report delves into the impacts, and examines some possible outcomes, including the potential for Foxconn to approach Vizio to further ambitious global growth goals.Subscribers Only

TV Market Black Friday ObservationsNovember 26, 2016As we typically do, IHS performed an in-store of TV shopping activity at a selection of retailers on Black Friday this year. With key retailers opening at 5-6pm on Thanksgiving Day, we were not able to attend the initial openings of these stores, but followed up soon thereafter. Initial impressions are that in-store traffic at some retailers may have been down slightly, but not surprisingly given the record growth in online sales that begin early on Thanksgiving day, which lessens the need to go in-store to shop except for the in-store only doorbuster items. TV interest seemed high, and shoppers were actively engaging with sales associates to ask questions about 4K, HDR, quantum dots and other new TV technology. However, it became apparent that consumer confusion is still high around these technologies, and even the most educated sales associates were not fully up to par on knowledge themselves. Please download the attached presentation for a breakdown and some images from our observations.Subscribers Only
