Amazon move to own the home network with Eero acquisitionFebruary 27, 2019Amazon is to enter the home networking equipment market by acquiring Eero, a whole-home Wi-Fi vendor. Eero’s solution consists of a router hub and beacons that can be plugged into a wall outlet to form a mesh network. Unlike most retail Wi-Fi extenders, Eero’s solution is a mesh system with a single service set identifier (SSID). The system also steers the end device to the nearest Eero access point, and identifies which is the most efficient Wi-Fi band, for the end device to achieve optimum Wi-Fi throughput around the home. Eero also offers Eero Plus; an in-home cyber security service for a 99 USD annual subscription. The service also provides managed safe browsing, with the end user able to manage accessible content in the app, anti-virus software, virtual private network (VPN) protection, password management, and ad blocking. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Amazon announced that every Eero employee will be given an offer for continued employment.Subscribers Only

Broadband World Forum 2018 highlightsNovember 27, 2018Broadband World Forum has finally come of age, celebrating its 18th edition this year in what continues to be the annual meeting point for the broadband industry. Messe Berlin opened its doors to more than 4100 attendees from more than 1500 organisations that gathered to share, learn and promote anything broadband. Historically, Broadband World Forum has been a telco-centric show and that was particularly evident this year. For a market that is purportedly converging, the cable side of the industry was absent as it was busy attending Cable-Tec Expo on the other side of the Atlantic.Subscribers Only

Netflix goes Ultra High DefinitionApril 09, 2014Netflix has started streaming content in Ultra HD (UHD), branded as Ultra HD 4K. UHD is approximately 4 times the resolution of Full HD. Netflix is streaming UHD content as its highest bandwidth profile at 15.6 Mbps, referenced on Netflix’s in-app player as 2160 HD. UHD streaming has currently only been rolled out for House of Cards season two. The video stream is compressed using next generation h.265/HEVC, therefore requiring both an HEVC decoder, as well as an updated version of Netflix’s client player. Netflix UHD clients are already embedded on UHD TVs offered by LG, Samsung, Sony and Vizio.

Verizon launches Multimedia Home GatewayApril 08, 2014US IPTV operator Verizon has launched its Multimedia Home Gateway (MHG), the VMS1100 Verizon Media Server, and associated thin client IPC1100 STBs, under the brand name Fios Quantum TV. The VMS1100 has a 1TB HDD, 6 tuners and can support 4 thin client devices. Verizon’s marketing for Fios Quantum TV is focused on a two MHG per household option that supports the simultaneous recording of 12 channels, viewing on 10 TVs and 2TB of recording capacity. As with previous Fios STBs, it relies on MoCA home networking to connect the boxes. Similar to most MHGs deployed in North America, it does not have integrated Wi-Fi. Nor is it designed to act as a broadband residential gateway. It relies on a separate routing device to connect to the wider home network and Internet. The product is being supplied by ARRIS and was originally announced as a pre-acquisition Motorola Home deal. ARRIS is supplying content security and software, as well as hardware for the platform.
