Technicolor to acquire Cisco’s STB and Broadband CPE businessJuly 30, 2015Technicolor is to acquire Cisco’s Connected Devices division, which generated USD 1.8 billion in sales of set-top boxes (STBs) and broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) in 2014, for USD 600 million in cash and stock. The deal is expected to close in late 2015 or early 2016, and will see Cisco’s STB and CPE products and workforce transferred to Technicolor’s Connected Home business unit, which recorded revenue of just under USD 1.8 billion in 2014. Cisco will retain its cloud and infrastructure solutions for video, which are currently marketed under the Videoscape brand.

TiVo has acquired CubiwareJune 17, 2015Set-top box (STB) and TV software vendor TiVo has acquired Cubiware; a Polish STB middleware provider. Cubiware will enable TiVo to address emerging market opportunities outside its traditional, mature and saturated pay TV markets. On the surface it provides TiVo with access to a customer base in emerging markets, but the rationale behind the acquisition may have much deeper strategic underpinnings.

China’s cable TV operators to focus on multiscreen TVMay 05, 2015The 23rd China Content Broadcasting Network (CCBN) took place in Beijing from March 24 to 28. China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television (SAPPRFT) used the show communicate new strategic directions for the development of China’s TV broadcasting. The government is encouraging cable TV operators to upgrade their networks to support multiscreen TV services to connected devices, now that TV digitization is almost complete. Free deploys the first Android TV set-top box with UHDApril 22, 2015Free deploys the first Android TV set-top box with UHD French telco Free has launched its UHD offering “Mini 4K” as the new default entry-level TV package, succeeding the HD Freebox Crystal. The package is composed of a set-top box (named Player), running on Android TV with Google Cast functionality and a broadband gateway (named Server) with an integrated Femtocell. The STB can be connected to the gateway wirelessly using 802.11n or wired Ethernet or via FreePlug power-line home networking adapters. The Mini 4K package is available to new subscribers for €29.99 a month on a rolling contract, whilst existing subscribers with a Freebox Revolution can get the Mini 4K STB as a second box for an additional €1.99 per month.Subscribers Only

STB-less pay TV expands to MEA with recent CAM launchesMay 02, 2014Sub-Saharan pay DTT provider GOtv has deployed CI+ Conditional Access Modules (CAMs), enabling its channels to be viewed on compatible integrated digital TV sets without the need for a set-top box (STB).
