Netflix acquires worldwide rights to second Youku TV seriesMay 15, 2019Netflix has acquired a second original series from Chinese streaming platform Youku. I Hear You, produced and owned jointly by Alibaba-owned Youku and Chinese film studio Sugarent Film & TV, will be made available by Netflix to subscribers in all 190 markets today (15 May). In China, the 24-episode romantic comedy was premiered simultaneously on streaming platforms Youku and Mango TV on 28 January 2019. Netflix acquired Day and Night in 2017.

Tencent sets out 2019 strategy for WeChat: Voice assistant, mini programs, and videoJanuary 24, 2019Tencent has revealed plans to integrate its voice-enabled digital assistant Xiaowei into its flagship messaging app WeChat. The integration will allow WeChat’s more than 1 billion active users to perform tasks such as playing music and hailing rides via voice command within the app. However, no further details on either the launch date of Xiaowei on WeChat or how many services it will support were revealed at the time of the announcement. In addition to revealing that WeChat has reached 1 billion daily active users during WeChat’s annual conference held in Guangzhou on 9 January 2019, Tencent unveiled 2019 plans to focus on developing mini programs by expanding the company’s advertising inventory, as well as adding a video-sharing feature to WeChat.Subscribers Only

China media watchdog continues to tighten control over foreign contentOctober 05, 2018The National Administration of TV and Radio (NATR), the newly formed Chinese media regulator, has published a draft discussion of the Provisions on Administration of Import and Broadcasting of Overseas Audio-Visual Programs. The provisions will aim to regulate the distribution of foreign content, including movies, TV shows, animation and documentaries. Media industry players were invited to comment on the draft until 19 October 2018.

The company, funded by both advertising and subscription, was launched by main owner Baidu in 2010.

iQiyi to work with Baidu for more AI application partnerships in 2018November 17, 2017During its annual iJOY event in Shanghai, Baidu-owned online video service, iQiyi has revealed plans to release more than 200 shows in 2018 and to collaborate with its mother company Baidu on artificial intelligence (AI) applications to drive its business. iQiyi aims to be a top media company driven by both content and technology innovation. iQiyi was founded in April 2010 by Baidu and Providence Equity Partners. Baidu is the biggest shareholder of iQiyi, with 80.5% stake in the company. In September 2017, iQiyi announced its plan to file for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States in 2018.

Netflix agrees deal with iQiyi to launch content in ChinaApril 27, 2017Netflix is licensing its original content to Baidu-owned streaming service iQiyi in China. The deal was first disclosed by Netflix at the Apos conference in Bali and was confirmed by iQiyi on 25 April. No further details, including a launch date, were disclosed.

WeChat introduces paid content for official accountsMarch 02, 2017One month after adding mini programs to its messaging platform, Tencent-owned WeChat announced that it will allow official accounts to provide paid publishing content. Tencent is currently trialing the service with a select group of invited accounts. WeChat official accounts were launched in 2012, allowing both companies and individuals to publish information to followers. WeChat reported 846 million monthly active users in Q3 2016, making it the clear messaging leader – but it also provides a broad portfolio of integrated content, services and payments.

WeChat launches a new platform, Mini ProgramsJanuary 20, 2017Tencent’s messaging platform WeChat has launched a new platform called Mini Programs, where brands and businesses developers are able to build programs on the platform without users having to leave the app. Users can scan a QR code or search for the name of program to be opened within WeChat. Tencent claims that messaging app will remain lean as the cloud-based platform requires no extra storage space. Mini Programs can be seen as an alternative to traditional app store distribution but Tencent claims Mini Programs is different because it does not provide central location to distribute apps like Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
