Google launches YouTube TV, as US virtual pay TV market becomes increasingly crowdedApril 28, 2017YouTube TV, Google’s virtual pay TV offering, has launched in five US cities. The service, which is limited to New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago and Philadelphia costs $35 per month when signing up on Android devices or on the computer, and $39.99 per month when billed through Apple’s App Store. YouTube TV is expected to roll out to more markets in the coming months.

Shaw gives up on IPTVJune 29, 2015Shaw Communications, Canada’s 2nd largest pay TV operator, has abounded its IPTV service in development since 2013. As a result, Shaw took a C$55 million write down charge in its fiscal 3rd quarter results for its abandoned IPTV assets. Instead, the company will look to license Comcast’s X1 platform and leverage Comcast’s cloud technology for multiple screen experience and use of devices both in and out of the home. Rogers Communications renews exclusive deal for carriage of WWE in CanadaAugust 04, 2014WWE Network will arrive in Canada as a premium linear pay TV channel as part of a 10 year deal between WWE and Rogers Communications. The deal makes Rogers the sole distributor of WWE Network and WWE programming (including pay per view events) in Canada through 2024. Cogeco gives up on IPTVJuly 15, 2014Cogeco, Canada's third largest cable TV operator, has decided to abandon a move into IPTV, taking an impairment charge of C$32.2 million (US $29.9 million) in the second quarter (the third quarter of the company's 2014 financial year). Cogeco will instead become the first Canadian operator to form a partnership with TiVo, providing its TV customers with a multiroom service which is expected to launch in the first half of 2015.

AT&T to acquire DIRECTVMay 19, 2014AT&T is to acquire DIRECTV for $48.5 billion to form a combined 26 million video subscriber entity to rival a Comcast/Time Warner Cable merger of nearly 30 million video subscribers. If the deal happens, AT&T will acquire the nation’s largest satellite provider, DIRECTV and its 20.2 million subscribers, resulting in a nationwide presence for AT&T to deliver video services where it cannot with its U-verse video platform that passes nearly 27 million homes. The resulting deal will have ramifications across the television industry that was already shaken up by the Comcast and Time Warner Cable $45 billion deal.
