British set-top box vendor Amino to acquire US competitor EntoneJuly 30, 2015British set-top box (STB) vendor Amino has conditionally offered to purchase US-based STB vendor Entone for $73 million. Entone generated $43.4 million in revenue for 2014 and claims to have approximately 150 customers worldwide, while Amino posted $56.5 million meaning the combined business’s revenue may reach in excess of $100 million. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2015.

Technicolor to acquire Cisco’s STB and Broadband CPE businessJuly 30, 2015Technicolor is to acquire Cisco’s Connected Devices division, which generated USD 1.8 billion in sales of set-top boxes (STBs) and broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) in 2014, for USD 600 million in cash and stock. The deal is expected to close in late 2015 or early 2016, and will see Cisco’s STB and CPE products and workforce transferred to Technicolor’s Connected Home business unit, which recorded revenue of just under USD 1.8 billion in 2014. Cisco will retain its cloud and infrastructure solutions for video, which are currently marketed under the Videoscape brand.

Netflix goes Ultra High DefinitionApril 09, 2014Netflix has started streaming content in Ultra HD (UHD), branded as Ultra HD 4K. UHD is approximately 4 times the resolution of Full HD. Netflix is streaming UHD content as its highest bandwidth profile at 15.6 Mbps, referenced on Netflix’s in-app player as 2160 HD. UHD streaming has currently only been rolled out for House of Cards season two. The video stream is compressed using next generation h.265/HEVC, therefore requiring both an HEVC decoder, as well as an updated version of Netflix’s client player. Netflix UHD clients are already embedded on UHD TVs offered by LG, Samsung, Sony and Vizio.
