US-China Tariffs Escalate - CE tariffs increased from 10% to 15%August 26, 2019On August 23rd, China raised tariffs on about $75 billion in goods from the US, including agricultural and automotive products. AT&T loses 946,000 TV subscribers in Q2 2019August 07, 2019In a blow to the already-fragile business of pay TV, AT&T announced that it lost 946,000 pay TV subscribers in Q2 2019. The losses were mainly premium (legacy DirecTV and U-verse TV subscribers), the company ending the quarter with 22.9 million TV subscribers. In the same quarter, the company increased broadband subscribers by 45,000 and mobile subscribers by 3.9 million. Subscriber revenues (from TV, broadband, and mobility) grew 1.6% in the quarter to $11.4 billion, following a contraction of 0.5% in Q1 2019.Subscribers Only

Sam's Club Kicks Off 2018 US TV Selling SeasonOctober 30, 2018Each year, usually a few weeks prior to Black Friday in early November, retailers are eager to be the first to start attracting eager buyers ahead of the official start of the holiday shopping season. TV sets excluded form China TariffsJune 15, 2018On June 15th, the US Office of the Trade Representative released the final document indicating which of the more than 1,300 products were to be included in tariffs against Chinese imports. The final list included more then 800 products, and an additional 280 were proposed pending public comment, totaling $50 billion in imports. TVs were initially on the list of products, causing panic among the CE industry, but intense lobbying led to TVs being dropped from the list of products.Subscribers Only

Comcast makes its offer for Sky officialApril 25, 2018Comcast has made a formal offer for Sky, valuing the UK-based satellite operator at £22 billion ($30.7 billion). Today's official offer of £12.50 represents a premium of more than 16% over 21st Century Fox’s offer for the 61% of Sky it does not own. Sky's independent board of directors has this morning withdrawn its recommendation of the Fox bid, making a battle for ownership of Sky between Comcast, Fox and possibly Walt Disney Co, seemingly inevitable.

Disney launches ESPN’s long awaited direct to consumer offerApril 17, 2018Disney has launched online subscription service ESPN+, which will feature 10,000 live MLB, NHL and other live events. The service, which launched on 12 April, is meant to supplement existing linear pay TV channel strategies, and will feature content which is not available on the company's existing linear channels. It is built on technology provided by BAMTech, which Disney took a majority stake in last year, specifically to enhance the company's streaming initiatives.

Growth in OTT video in 2017 fails to offset the continued decline in US pay TV subscribersFebruary 20, 2018Full year results for key TV operators in the US have shown that subscriptions to linear pay TV services are continuing to decline. Subscriptions to TV and online video services are estimated to have fallen by 675,000 subscribers over 2017 – a year-on-year decline of 0.7%. This represents an improvement on the previous year, which saw declines of over one million pay TV subscribers. The year did see growth in broadband-delivered live TV services such as DIRECTV Now, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue, however.

Consolidation continues, Cincinnati Bell buys Hawaiian TelcomJuly 14, 2017U.S. regional telecom operator, Cincinnati Bell, announced a merger with Hawaiian Telcom for $650 million (including the assumption of debt).
