Hands-free Alexa on Amazon’s new 10-inch tabletSeptember 29, 2017For those consumers struggling to choose between a smart speaker and a tablet, Amazon has a new option, a 10.1-inch Fire tablet with hands-free Alexa on board. Incorporating an IPS, LCD-TFT, 1920 x 1200 display and a MediaTek quad-core (1.8 GHz) processor and a reported 10 hours of battery life, the new tablet is available in a 32GB version for $149.99 US. Users wanting more storage can purchase a 64GB version for an additional $40. The base model is less than half the cost of Apple’s popular 9.7-inch unit, but nearly double the price of Amazon’s 8-inch model.

Samsung puts fresh focus on tablets at Mobile World CongressFebruary 26, 2017The Android based, 9.7-inch, Galaxy Tab S3, like its predecessor, features a QXGA, 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display but this model sports a glass back with its metal frame. The unit is HDR ready, through its mobile Digital Natural Image engine (mDNIe) and it incorporates quad speakers, tuned by AKG. The quad speakers’ output auto-rotates to accommodate landscape or portrait viewing and battery life and frame rate per second (FPS) are both substantially improved from that of the S2.

Quantum communicationFebruary 22, 2017Quantum computing, although still in its initial stages, is not a myth anymore and the first commercial deployments should be available in the next 10-15 years. It is still a work in progress but several large corporations including NASA, Google, IBM and Microsoft have all publicly announced investments in quantum computing research. Additionally, Universities and research institutions are supporting their efforts. Xiaomi has been steadily accumulating patents. Now what?June 11, 2016On May 31, 2016, Microsoft and Xiaomi announced that they are expanding their global partnership. One of the key details of the global partnership was patent cross licensing deal that included the transfer of 1,500 patents from Microsoft to Xiaomi. Also beginning in September 2016, Xiaomi’s Android devices will come pre-installed with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Skype applications. Other terms of the deal were not released.

Rovi acquires TiVoMay 04, 2016The heavens have aligned for two of the media-and-entertainment industry’s technology giants. Analytics, program guide and IP-licensing kingpin Rovi will acquire OTT software, UI pioneer and DVR progenitor TiVo. IBM acquires ClearleapDecember 16, 2015IBM has agreed to acquire Clearleap, a US based company who provides over-the-top (OTT) video solutions to the media sector. Clearleap’s OTT stack and SaaS solutions will be integrated into the IBM Cloud platform, and collectively, the combined portfolio will be positioned to help media companies reduce the complexity and expense of delivering digital content. Amazon Underground innovates with free apps but faces challengesOctober 07, 2015Amazon’s Underground app program replaces Amazon’s previous “Free app a day” offer which provided one free paid app each day. Launched in September 2015, the new Android app integrates Amazon’s app store, retail, and video services. Amazon Underground’s “Actually free” program provides a dedicated catalogue of apps that are free to download and also have free in-app purchases.
