Comcast to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 gatewayMay 28, 2015Comcast is to deploy a DOCSIS 3.1 gigabit Home Gateway. It will also be compatible with Comcast’s current hybrid fiber-coax network, and is backwards compatible with the current DOCSIS 3.0 infrastructure. The gateway will be capable of delivering gigabit bandwidth speeds over dual channel 802.11n/ac Wi-Fi, and will feature Reference Design Kit Broadband software. ARRIS consolidates market leading position with Pace acquisitionApril 27, 2015US Cable TV technology supplier ARRIS intends to acquire British set-top box (STB) vendor Pace, for USD 2.1B; valuing Pace’s business at 80% of its 2014 revenue. The acquisition will create the world’s largest supplier of set-top box (STB), broadband gateway and cable TV technology. Combined 2014 revenues of USD 7.9B make will it twice the size of its nearest competitor, Cisco’s Service Provider Video business unit. BT to trial G.Fast technologyFebruary 24, 2015BT plans to trial G.Fast technology in two markets within its footprint in summer 2015. 4000 homes and businesses in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire and Gosforth, Newcastle will pilot the program. Comcast acquires intelligent home network solutionsJuly 17, 2014Comcast has acquired PowerCloud Systems, parent company to Skydog, developers of monitoring software for Wi-Fi management and manufacturers of router hardware to implement these solutions. Verizon launches Multimedia Home GatewayApril 08, 2014US IPTV operator Verizon has launched its Multimedia Home Gateway (MHG), the VMS1100 Verizon Media Server, and associated thin client IPC1100 STBs, under the brand name Fios Quantum TV. The VMS1100 has a 1TB HDD, 6 tuners and can support 4 thin client devices. Verizon’s marketing for Fios Quantum TV is focused on a two MHG per household option that supports the simultaneous recording of 12 channels, viewing on 10 TVs and 2TB of recording capacity. As with previous Fios STBs, it relies on MoCA home networking to connect the boxes. Similar to most MHGs deployed in North America, it does not have integrated Wi-Fi. Nor is it designed to act as a broadband residential gateway. It relies on a separate routing device to connect to the wider home network and Internet. The product is being supplied by ARRIS and was originally announced as a pre-acquisition Motorola Home deal. ARRIS is supplying content security and software, as well as hardware for the platform.
