South Korean broadcasters launch Kocowa, a new online streaming service in the USJuly 28, 2017Three of South Korea's leading broadcasters have launched Kocowa (Korean Content Wave), an online video streaming service, in the US. The service, launched on 24 July, is backed by Korean Content Platform (KCP), a US-based joint venture company between Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS). The service offers content from these broadcasters with English subtitles, with some shows airing six hours after broadcast in South Korea.

World's first UHD Broadcasts Begin in KoreaJune 02, 2017On 31 May, Korea became the first country to broadcast UHD over-the-air using the newly adopted ATSC 3.0 standard. This begins in the greater Seoul area, then expands to other major markets over the next 5 years, culminating in the end of HD broadcasting around 2027. Smartphone drives South Korean online video growthJune 01, 2017South Korean broadband household penetration reached 83% in 2011 and continues to rise, increasing to 85% by the end of 2016. Pay TV homes increased from 15 million in 2011 to almost 18 million over the same period as the market matured. Netflix commissions Australian original seriesMay 22, 2017Netflix has commissioned Tidelands, a primetime drama series, as its latest investment in local Australian content. Tidelands will debut exclusively on Netflix and premiere worldwide. The first season will have 10 episodes that run for 50 minutes each.
