Authorities fight TV and video piracy in Malaysia and SingaporeFebruary 15, 2019Governments in Malaysia and Singapore are stepping up anti-piracy initiatives as pay TV operators and online subscription platforms suffer from the impact of set-top-boxes offering illegal access to their services. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) held an Anti-Piracy Summit on 14 February with support from Coalition Against Piracy, the Asia Video Industry Association, TV and online broadcasters Astro, Media Prima, Dim Sum, and iFlix. The event highlighted the revenues lost by industry and government because of piracy.

Korean broadcasters join forces with SK Telecom to step up original content productionJanuary 28, 2019Korean telco SK Telecom has signed a memorandum of understanding with the country's three leading broadcasters to integrate their online video platforms, Oksusu and POOQ. Broadcasters Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) and Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) operate POOQ through a joint venture called Content Alliance Platform. The new service will aim to create more local original content to fend off growing competition. According to reports, SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-Ho was seeking an initial investment of $180 million to produce original content; in comparison, Oksusu spent just $10 million on content last year. The company also aims to expand the new online video platform to Southeast Asia later in the year.

Nexon cancels development of Titanfall OLJuly 17, 2018The freemium version of Titanfall was designed exclusively for Asian markets with development handled by Nexon GT, specifically the team responsible for Sudden Attack. The agreement to cancel Titanfall OL was co-announced by EA and Nexon, while the was still in closed-beta testing and yet to have been officially launched. The two companies will continue to work on FIFA Online 4, as well as new products.

Facebook buys rights to Premier League in four Asian marketsJuly 06, 2018In a further move into live sports streaming, Facebook is reported to have bought the rights to Premier League games for three seasons beginning in 2019/20 in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Unconfirmed reports today gave a value of $260 million for the cycle of games included in the contract.

New Malaysian Government to boost ad revenue, confidence and competitionMay 14, 2018Malaysia recently held its 14th general election which concluded in the welcoming of a new government on 10 May 2018. This marks the first ever change in government since the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition came to power in 1957 – the year Malaysia gained independence from the British. The new ruling government Pakatan Harapan promises a fresh start for consumers and businesses alike since becoming disenchanted over the rising cost of living and a corruption scandal surrounding BN since 2015. Under the new regime, consumer sentiment and business confidence will improve and subsequently drive economic growth over the next 5 years. As a result, IHS Markit expects advertising revenues to return to growth and competition to increase in Malaysia’s media market.

Samsung looks to innovative S9 camera to energize Galaxy S smartphone salesFebruary 25, 2018Samsung is packing its main innovative push into the cameras of its latest flagship Galaxy S devices. With the new super slow motion video capture, Samsung has improved on previous industry attempts to commercialize this feature.
