Verizon Courts Cord-cutters with Newly-announced 5G Home Service with Free Apple TV or ChromecastSeptember 13, 2018Verizon recently announced the rollout of its 5G wireless home broadband service in the US, 5G Home, with orders opening September 13th, 2018 and launch beginning October 1st in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. The company is touting typical speeds of approximately 300 Mbps, peaking at 1 Gigabit, with no data caps. The service is priced at $50/month for existing Verizon subscribers, and $70/month for non-subscribers, and comes with three months of YouTube TV free. Subscribers also receive their choice of a free Google Chromecast Ultra or Apple TV 4K.Subscribers Only

Growth in OTT video in 2017 fails to offset the continued decline in US pay TV subscribersFebruary 20, 2018Full year results for key TV operators in the US have shown that subscriptions to linear pay TV services are continuing to decline. Subscriptions to TV and online video services are estimated to have fallen by 675,000 subscribers over 2017 – a year-on-year decline of 0.7%. This represents an improvement on the previous year, which saw declines of over one million pay TV subscribers. The year did see growth in broadband-delivered live TV services such as DIRECTV Now, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue, however.

US pay TV suffers largest quarterly subscriber loss everAugust 19, 2016US pay TV saw its largest quarterly subscriber loss in history, amidst a seasonally weak Q2 coupled with the intensifying effects of cord-cutting. There was a loss of 701,480 pay TV subscribers (not including Dish’s Sling TV), slightly more than the 646,450 lost in the prior-year quarter. The results pushed Pay TV video penetration of TV households downward, continuing its relentless decline. Pay TV penetration in Q2 2016 dropped to 82.6%, down from 84.7% in the same quarter of 2015.
