In IHS Markit’s latest survey of UHD channel carriage, in 8 of the 28 countries where pay TV operators provided linear UHD channels as part of a package, 25% or more of total TV households had access to linear UHD. Disney completes $71 billion Fox acquisitionMarch 22, 2019Walt Disney completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV studios, cable networks and other assets on Wednesday 20 March. The deal, originally agreed in December 2017, was subject to the scrutiny of regulators from five continents, some of whom required specific terms to be met in order for the sale to proceed. The acquisition price is valued at approximately $71 billion.

UEFA teams up with EA Sports to launch new esports tournamentNovember 20, 2018UEFA has signed a deal with EA Sports aimed at launching the eChampions League, a games tournament on the PS4. The 'etournament' will take place in March 2019 and will award a total purse of $280,000 (with $100,000 for the overall winner). To sign this deal, UEFA had to cancel an existing agreement with Konami, meaning that Konami's latest Pro Evolution Soccer now features UEFA Champions and Europa League competitions as offline modes only.

Vodafone launches virtual pay TV service in GreeceSeptember 24, 2018Vodafone has launched a new standalone online subscription video service in Greece, called Vodafone TV. The service is available to everyone with a broadband connection, including customers who do not subscribe to mobile or fixed broadband services provided by Vodafone. The service will offer a total of 62 linear channels, 4,000 library movies and 7,000 episodes of TV series, with the most recent blockbuster movies being subject to a rental fee. Vodafone TV is available to all devices that support iOS and Android, and provides the subscriber with the ability to simultaneously use up to three connected or mobile devices per account. The service also offers a Cloud DVR option, allowing consumers to save and store content in the cloud.

Disney signs multi-year deal with Blizzard to broadcast the Overwatch League on its channelsJuly 24, 2018US cable channels ESPN and Disney XD are broadcasting the Overwatch League (OWL), billed as the world’s first major esports league, under a multi-year agreement with the Walt Disney Co and Activision-Blizzard announced last week. The final stages of OWL were shown by the two networks starting on 11 July. The two days of finals — on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 July — will be entirely live on ESPN, ESPN3 and Disney XD in prime-time slot. Highlights of the tournament will be broadcast on the ABC network the day after its conclusion. Financial terms of this agreement were not been disclosed, but it will cover more than one edition, allowing the newly-created esports league to plan its medium term future.

Comcast makes its offer for Sky officialApril 25, 2018Comcast has made a formal offer for Sky, valuing the UK-based satellite operator at £22 billion ($30.7 billion). Today's official offer of £12.50 represents a premium of more than 16% over 21st Century Fox’s offer for the 61% of Sky it does not own. Sky's independent board of directors has this morning withdrawn its recommendation of the Fox bid, making a battle for ownership of Sky between Comcast, Fox and possibly Walt Disney Co, seemingly inevitable.

Disney launches ESPN’s long awaited direct to consumer offerApril 17, 2018Disney has launched online subscription service ESPN+, which will feature 10,000 live MLB, NHL and other live events. The service, which launched on 12 April, is meant to supplement existing linear pay TV channel strategies, and will feature content which is not available on the company's existing linear channels. It is built on technology provided by BAMTech, which Disney took a majority stake in last year, specifically to enhance the company's streaming initiatives.

Growth in OTT video in 2017 fails to offset the continued decline in US pay TV subscribersFebruary 20, 2018Full year results for key TV operators in the US have shown that subscriptions to linear pay TV services are continuing to decline. Subscriptions to TV and online video services are estimated to have fallen by 675,000 subscribers over 2017 – a year-on-year decline of 0.7%. This represents an improvement on the previous year, which saw declines of over one million pay TV subscribers. The year did see growth in broadband-delivered live TV services such as DIRECTV Now, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue, however.
