Google launches YouTube TV, as US virtual pay TV market becomes increasingly crowdedApril 28, 2017YouTube TV, Google’s virtual pay TV offering, has launched in five US cities. The service, which is limited to New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago and Philadelphia costs $35 per month when signing up on Android devices or on the computer, and $39.99 per month when billed through Apple’s App Store. YouTube TV is expected to roll out to more markets in the coming months.

US pay TV suffers largest quarterly subscriber loss everAugust 19, 2016US pay TV saw its largest quarterly subscriber loss in history, amidst a seasonally weak Q2 coupled with the intensifying effects of cord-cutting. There was a loss of 701,480 pay TV subscribers (not including Dish’s Sling TV), slightly more than the 646,450 lost in the prior-year quarter. The results pushed Pay TV video penetration of TV households downward, continuing its relentless decline. Pay TV penetration in Q2 2016 dropped to 82.6%, down from 84.7% in the same quarter of 2015. Cable once again showed its resilience with continued improvement, while satellite growth was flat and IPTV continued its streak of accelerated losses.Subscribers Only

Dish launches skinny bundle, Flex Pack, to reignite interest in its satellite serviceAugust 15, 2016Dish Network debuted its traditional TV skinny bundle package, Flex Pack, in an effort to reignite interest with cost conscious customers. The introduction comes at a time when Dish continues to lose pay TV subscribers at an alarming pace. Sports rights costs continue to accelerate with latest deal between Big Ten and ESPNJune 21, 2016ESPN and the Big Ten Conference, a major college sports division in the US, are reported to have reached a deal where ESPN will pay an average of $190 million a year over six years for half of the conference’s sports media rights.
