Fire TV returns to the battleApril 25, 2018After a weak launch in 2017, Amazon has struck a deal with Best Buy to relaunch the Fire TV platform. Starting summer 2018, Best Buy will start selling Toshiba and Insignia Fire TV Edition Smart TVs, which will also be available on Amazon.com with Best Buy as a third party seller. This has several implications for the smart TV space, but especially for companies like Roku because Insignia was previously using the Roku TV platform and was one of the larger partners last year. For Amazon, it also represents a recognition that the brick and mortar space is still very important for some categories where consumers still prefer to "kick the tires" before purchasing.Subscribers Only

Reevaluating satellite for mobile backhaul in the LTE eraApril 25, 2018There have historically been challenges for satellite as an access and transport technology, due mainly to cost, latency, and availability. This has particularly been the case in the mobile backhaul segment, where competing solutions—notably fiber, microwave, and PON—have outpaced the evolution of satellite’s capabilities. This has led to satellite being relegated to a niche solution within the backhaul market and often just competing for scraps in the access market. However, a recent evolution in the performance of satellite technology suggests that it can become a viable connectivity solution in these markets and compete to capture if not a dominant market share, at least a more sizeable and sustainable niche in the future. Impact of Proposed China Tariffs on US TV MarketApril 06, 2018On April 4th, the US Office of the Trade Representative published a list of 1,300 products that could be subjected to an additional 25% import tariff if coming from China. Flat panel TVs are included on this list, and given the very low margins on the bulk of entry level TVs, and the fact that many of the smaller in mid-sized TVs are imported fully assembled from China, it could have a very big impact on the entire TV market. The attached report breaks down the details of the possible tariff, and the impacts on the supply chain, as well as possible reactions. Of course, it is important to note that this list of products is under a 60 day review process, and we expect heavy lobbying on the part of manufacturers and trade organizations. The outcome or final list could change before the end of May.Subscribers Only

The State of Smart Speakers and Digital Assistants, Post-CES and MWC 2018February 27, 2018The 2018 CES tradeshow was dominated by common themes revolving around AI, such as machine learning, voice interfaces, and digital assistants. Building upon the AI-first focus of CES, Apple’s HomePod launch, and Google’s increased aggression in language support for Google Assistant just announced at Mobile World Congress 2018, competition within the market for smart speakers and related digital assistants has now truly begun escalating sharply. IHS Markit expects annual shipments of smart speakers to grow steadily from 32 million units in 2017 to 47 million in 2018, reaching 85 million in 2021. This is only a fraction of the more than 5 billion consumer devices supporting digital assistants in use by the end of 2018, with nearly 3 billion more added by the end of 2021.Subscribers Only

Lighting brightens smart home future in EuropeDecember 19, 2017Although motion sensors and door/window contacts are necessary for automation and security purposes, security sensors have not been the primary driver thus far in Europe. Instead, energy control devices, such as smart plugs and lighting, have been the primary device types. More specifically, convenience- and savings-related sensors have trumped safety sensors.
