Authorities fight TV and video piracy in Malaysia and SingaporeFebruary 15, 2019Governments in Malaysia and Singapore are stepping up anti-piracy initiatives as pay TV operators and online subscription platforms suffer from the impact of set-top-boxes offering illegal access to their services. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) held an Anti-Piracy Summit on 14 February with support from Coalition Against Piracy, the Asia Video Industry Association, TV and online broadcasters Astro, Media Prima, Dim Sum, and iFlix. The event highlighted the revenues lost by industry and government because of piracy.

Box office in China grows by 9.1% in 2018February 15, 2019Box office revenue in China reached RMB60.9 bn in 2018, a 9.1% growth year-on-year, according to data from China Film Administration (former SARFT). In total, 1.716 bn cinema tickets were sold during the year, up from 1.62 bn in 2017.

Early year end 2018 US pay TV reporting shows video subscriber declinesFebruary 08, 2019Following early FY 2018 reporting by the five of the six largest pay TV operators (Comcast, DirecTV, Charter, FiOS, and U-verse), the US pay TV market is on track for the largest drop in penetration in its history. IHS Markit expects pay TV penetration of pay TV homes to decline nearly 4% in 2018, while the next largest loss was in 2017 with slightly more than a 3% drop. AT&T was the largest contributor to the decline in 2018 with its satellite unit losing more than 1.2 million subscribers in the year. Struggling Eleven Sports UK sheds further sports rightsJanuary 31, 2019Eleven Sports will continue to show exclusive coverage of Spain’s La Liga in the UK and Ireland, but will lose the Italian Serie A and Dutch Eredivisie from the end of this month. Eleven Sports said the move follows a ‘strategic decision to end our partnership with IMG’—the agency managing the rights. Eleven Sports, which launched online-only in the UK and Ireland in August, said it intended to continue offering La Liga beyond the current season. The operator agreed three-year deals for the UK rights to La Liga and Serie A starting from the 2018/19 season.

Korean broadcasters join forces with SK Telecom to step up original content productionJanuary 28, 2019Korean telco SK Telecom has signed a memorandum of understanding with the country's three leading broadcasters to integrate their online video platforms, Oksusu and POOQ. Broadcasters Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) and Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) operate POOQ through a joint venture called Content Alliance Platform. The new service will aim to create more local original content to fend off growing competition. According to reports, SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-Ho was seeking an initial investment of $180 million to produce original content; in comparison, Oksusu spent just $10 million on content last year. The company also aims to expand the new online video platform to Southeast Asia later in the year.

Sweden replaces radio and TV licence feeJanuary 03, 2019Sweden this week became the latest country to abolish the radio and TV licence fee. With effect from 1 January, the old system of a payment due from any household with a radio or TV set has been replaced by a fee levied on individuals liable for income tax aged over 18. The fee is based on 1% of taxable income, up to a maximum of Skr 1,300 ($144) per person. Anyone with no taxable income, such as full-time students, will not have to pay.

Liberty Global to sell CEE DTH assets to M7 GroupDecember 21, 2018Liberty Global has reached an agreement to sell its Central and Eastern European DTH (direct-to-home) TV services to international pay TV operator M7 Group. The deal, valued at €180 million ($206 million), covers the UPC Direct service in Hungary, the freeSAT brand in Czech Republic and Slovakia, and FocusSat in Romania. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval, which is expected in the first half of 2019. The proposed deal follows Liberty Global’s sale of key cable TV assets in Germany and Central and Eastern Europe to Vodafone in May 2018, and the divestment of its Austrian unit to T-Mobile in July 2018.
