New announced capacity expansions and increased wafer efficiencies will worsen the overcapacity of the polysilicon industry in H2 2019

IHS Markit has raised its global installation forecast by 18% to 123 GW in 2019. However, on the supply side, IHS Markit anticipates that there will be limited capacity expansions in 2019, corresponding to an increase in utilization rates across the supply-chain. This should help to correct the overcapacity situation experienced by the PV manufacturing industry in H2 2018, for all nodes except polysilicon, where total capacity will grow by 16%.
