Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to be a conversation starter throughout the medical industry. Its utilization to improve healthcare provision and efficiency is welcomed with both excitement and anticipation. As monitoring products collect vital information on patient status, they are heavily involved in providing the data utilized to make informed choices through predictive analysis in the patient care pathway.
Many of the leading players are incorporating algorithms that use important patient data to improve patient diagnosis and the level of care provided. The overall aim is to improve operational efficiency, workflow, and clinical support. However, it is still unclear if the data is utilised fully. There is also debate on whether the use of algorithms is Artificial Intelligence, or whether it can incorporate secondary information to ensure patient diagnosis is accurate. Can it really replace a healthcare professionals interpretation of complete patient information?
Providers want the “first time right diagnosis,” subsequently reducing admissions and overall costs of healthcare provision. With the incorporation of data analytical algorithms within clinical solutions, providers will be able to see significant cost savings over the lifetime of the product. Focus to date has been on developments that not only improve workflow but also improve quality of the patient experience and outcomes. Several product launches in the monitoring field incorporate algorithms to help digest patient data to assist in diagnosis.
The recent launch from Philips IntelliVue GaurdianSoftware mobile client app adds to the company’s capabilities to provide mobile solutions to care givers. The software is driven by algorithms to interlink early-warning scoring protocols to prioritize patient care.
Isansys Patient Status Engine (PSE) provides a complete monitoring solution, using sensors to collect vital signs information. The PSE uses the information in addition to analytical algorithms and big data to provide continuous monitoring in both clinical and at-home settings.
GE Healthcare has recently partnered with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to build a Command Center at the Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), UK. This will be the first of its kind in Europe, using AI to provide a clear, instant, and real-time of its 800-bed hospital. Patient data will be displayed on multiple high definition screens in the Command Center, as well as on tablets and mobile devices, providing 24-7 support. The main aim of the command center will be to help the staff to make quick and informed decisions on how to best manage patient care.
This list is not exhaustive, but it demonstrates a movement forward in precision medicine and analytics within the patient monitors market. As newer products are launched, the incorporation of algorithms and predictive analytics is expected to continue.
