Honor View 20: Honor strengthens brand position in EMEA with the introduction of its new flagship device in Paris

Last week, Honor held a European launch event for the Honor View 20 in Paris. The device was first released in China at the end of 2018. The fact that Honor organizes the event in Europe highlights the strategic direction of the brand: to strengthen its position in EMEA. This strategy might be especially important going forward if Huawei continues to face headwind in 2019 from its network business unit.

Unlike the global smartphone market, Honor managed a decent annual growth of 12% in the first three quarters of 2018, according to IHS Markit’s in Smartphone Model Market Tracker. Honor achieved this growth by focusing on the mid-range pricing segment, one of the few growing smartphone market segments, while also focusing on younger buyers.

To remain an attractive brand for younger buyers requires a lot of innovation and enhanced user experiences, according to Honor´s President, George Zhao. Indeed, Honor puts a whole bunch of innovations into the new flagship device to appeal to its target audience:

Camera

One of the highlights of the phone is the world’s first 48MP (Mega Pixel) rear camera, powered by the Sony IMX586 sensor. Its AI camera now features two NPUs and to ISPs, improving the performance from previous View devices. A key feature is Clarity Mode, which uses AI to combine multiple 48MP images into one, optimized image.

The second rear camera is another new feature on the smartphone market. Honor’s ToF (Time of Flight) camera, brings new user experiences to the phone like enabling 3D mapping of the face and body, motion control gaming and other AR applications.

Design

There is only one 4.3mm punch hole on the front of 6.4-inch display for the 25MP front camera. Other sensors have been moved to the top of the frame. The View 20 is one of the first smartphones launched with a new hole punch display design. The design allows the bezel on all sides of the screen to be further minimized.

The screen itself, though, is just a 1080p IPS LCD screen which sets certain design limitations (no curved edges and no fingerprint sensor on the screen). But this seems to be a good compromise considering the price target of the phone.

The glass back cover of the phone presents a radiant V-shape created using nanolithography. There is also an 8GB version which was created in collaboration with likewise young audience oriented Italian brand Moschino. The Moschino edition features pre-installed Wallpapers with the Moschino bear and the double question mark logo.

Performance

Honor View 20 is available in two configurations: with 6GB RAM / 128GB ROM and 8GB RAM / 256GB ROM memory options. The phone is also equipped with the latest in-house Kirin 980 processor with Turbo 2.0 functionality and liquid cooling, a large 4000mAH battery with fast charging and triple Wi-Fi antenna. In continuation of last year’s focus, the View 20 is also geared towards mobile gaming. Honor partners with Epic Games and enables Fortnite to run on 60fps. The ToF camera opens numerous possibilities for AR and motion-controlled gaming

Price and availability

EMEA price for 6GB Version is €569/£499 and €649/£579 for 8GB (Moschino edition), and is available from 23rd of January in France, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Poland, Czech, Finland, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Portugal, UAE, India, Belgium, Malaysia and Netherlands.

The View 20 brings hardware and software innovations to a higher mid-range device, further strengthening Honors position in the segment in light of increasing competition from other brands. With the phone, Honor, and by extension Huawei, are setting the bar for other OEMs to follow as they release new devices at MWC in February and beyond in 2019.
