On 23 October, 2018, Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned utility, announced plans to develop 360 MW / 1,440 MWh of battery energy storage across 90 sites by 2021. While the project has secured multilateral funding from the African Development Bank and the World Bank, IHS Markit believes it is unlikely that the full scale will be operational under the proposed timeline.
