Tencent’s PC and mobile segment displayed significant decline this quarter, with a decrease of 10.8% and 18.9%, respectively, but the company successfully maintain its 70% market share. Q2 is usually off-peak season for games publishers thanks to exams, but this year's lull is worsened due to fresh waves of regulation that have prevented new games launching into the market.

Highlights:

  • With new games denied publication numbers as the regulatory landscape shifts, publishers are looking elsewhere for opportunity
  • PUBG Mobile's launch drew users away from Honor Of Kings, but regulatory issues mean it can't yet generate much revenue
  • Publishers are turning to existing games to drive fresh growth, either as exports, or through marketing to new groups of people
