- CenturyLink, which merged with Level 3 last year, led the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking market, with the largest installed base.
- Verizon, Twilio, AT&T and Voyant rounded out the top five providers.
- Voyant and Rogers are newcomers to the scorecard this year.
In its 2018 “SIP Trunking North America Scorecard,” IHS Markit analyzed and ranked the top SIP trunking providers in North America. In November of last year, CenturyLink finalized its merger with Level 3, creating a strong provider of enterprise communication services, including SIP trunking. The combined company strengthened its position as the largest SIP trunking provider in North America.
Verizon, in second position, had another strong year, growing its SIP trunking lines and ending with the second-largest installed base of SIP trunks in 2017. Verizon has consistently led in rolling out enhanced capabilities for Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity.
Just a few years ago, there was little differentiation in the SIP trunking market. Fast forward to today, and there is a stark difference between traditional trunking services with a grounding in the old world of contracting for voice networking, and the new world of on-demand trunks, pay for what you use, and never worry about capacity planning.
In this year’s scorecard, Twilio made the biggest jump from sixth- to third-ranked position, because of the continued growth of its installed base and strong financials. Twilio has been a disruptor with its Elastic SIP Trunking service, which has grown to a sizeable installed base. The strong growth of Twilio’s Elastic SIP Trunking service is a reflection of the appeal of flexible consumption-based pricing.
