Area shipments of large thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) panels -- larger than 9 inches -- increased by 11% year-on-year (y/y) and unit shipments by 7% in the first half of 2018. The growth was led by an increase in larger size panel production capacities and rapid LCD TV panel price erosion.
By application, shipments of others application displays, including public, industrial and automotive displays, jumped 35% by area and 40% by unit during the same period, as panel makers are struggling to sustain their profitability and fab utilization. Monitor display shipments rose 6% y/y by area and 3% y/y by unit. TV panel shipments, which increased by 11% by area, accounted for 78% of total large TFT LCD panel shipments by area in the first half of 2018.
Unit shipments of 55-inch and larger TV panels, including LCD and organic light-emitting diode (OLED), increased by 20% y/y in the first half of 2018. Unit shipments of AMOLED TV panels reached 1.4 million in the first half of 2018, up 104% y/y.
South Korean panel makers still lead the TV panel market in terms of unit shipments -- LG Display with a 26% share and Samsung Display with 25%. Being key panel suppliers to global top-tier TV brands that are focusing on larger TV screens helps them maintain the market lead position.
However, as Chinese panel makers just began their Gen10.5 fabs, the competition will be more intense between Chinese and South Korean panel makers.
