In the most recent competitor database, smart home companies were analyzed across several factors including the number of connected consumer devices by segment (climate control, energy & water, lighting, security and consumer electronics) , smart speaker compatibility, company size and platform.
- In total, there were 1,049 companies analyzed and the largest segment was lighting, with 632 companies offering a smart (connected) lighting device. Security was the second largest category, with 249 manufactures offering a security device (cameras, intruder sensors, video doorbells, etc.). Consequently, smart home companies, on average, offer a device in 1.1 market segments.
- Wi-Fi was the most widely used protocol, with 928 brands working with Wi-Fi. This means about 88 percent of brands support Wi-Fi. Bluetooth was the second largest, with 170 brands. KNX was the smallest, with only 5 brands supporting.
- In terms of smart speaker compatibility, Amazon supported about 656 brands, while Google supported about 354. In terms of agnostic compatibility with Amazon and Google, 352 brands supported both smart speaker platforms.
- Also for smart speakers, out of 76 professionally monitored service providers analyzed, 11 worked with Amazon (14%) and 2 worked with Google (3%).
