A total 14 markets globally saw total pay TV subscriptions decline in the 2017. Significantly, though, only in six of these did pay TV revenues decline in the year, with operators – in most cases – able to compensate for customer loses by increasing the amount of revenue generated by their remaining subscriptions. At a regional level, cord-cutting was not unique to North America in 2017 – Latin America experienced its first net decline in pay TV subscriptions in 15 years, with economic difficulties playing their part in addition to growing online video competition.

Highlights:

  • Pay TV net subscriber additions by region and platform over the last five years
  • Ranking of the markets in which pay TV has declined, with corresponding revenue analysis
  • Online video growth tracking by region and provider
  • Assessment of selected operators' virtual pay TV strategies in response to cord-cutting
